Wanted: Articles On Politics in Entertainment Media
Star Trek and the X-Men were always political
The Ugly Monster is accepting essays, reviews, and analyses about movies, TV shows, comic books, and games with political messages and positions. Even if it’s unintentional or only implicit, most — maybe all — media has some political opinion.
Parasite is a study of classism.
Bioshock critiques Ayn Rand’s objectivism.
Tron: Uprising is about anti-fascist resistance.
X-Men is an allegory for the civil rights movement.
Snowpiercer is the capitalist system turned on its side.
Star Trek is wall-to-wall social and political commentary.
Judge Dredd was originally a satire of American policing.
War for the Planet of the Apes is about the violence of borders.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier criticizes the surveillance state.
Star Wars was always anti-imperialist, and Andor is about fighting fascism.
Warhammer 40,000 satirized Thatcherism, the Catholic Church, the Satanic Panic, and Nazis — before it lost its way.
Metal Gear Solid addresses nuclear proliferation, disinformation, the military-industrial complex, and the Cold War.
The movie adaptation of Starship Troopers satirizes Heinlein’s book, which was originally a pro-military response to anti-nuclear weapon activists.
We’re also interested in analyses of right wing messaging in media. 6 Underground is riddled with imperialist overtones. Barbie promotes consumerism as a way to find oneself. Downton Abbey is explicitly and intentionally pro-rich propaganda.
