CHAPTER TWO — THE MENTORS

PART FOUR — YOU ARE IN WALING DAZE

At the same time that Kellan introduced me to Elliott, he introduced me to Tyler Durden from Real Social Dynamics (RSD), and the world of pick up.

Kellan let me know, honestly, that I stunk with women.

This was hard to hear at first, but after watching a few of Tyler’s videos on YouTube, I soon discovered why this was the case. Here’s an example.

Up until that point, I had typically been in the habit of placing girls on a pedestal and either been needy, or just being a dick.

I came across as arrogant, uptight and as I said before, a dick. At the time I didn’t know this. I thought it was girls who were shallow, not me. I thought it was the guys’ looks that got them the girls. I thought only assholes got girls. I thought any number of things, but not the truth.

The world of RSD certainly cleared these beliefs up. However it wasn’t the shallow gimmicks of pick up that interested me.

It was the idea that to being attractive to women isn’t something you do; it’s something you are.

In my desperation to nail this ‘skill set’, I spent countless hours watching YouTube, listening to audios and reading books on the subject. I came across one product, entitled “The Blue Print Decoded”, a recording of a four-day super conference, which promoted not just pick up, but deep identity change.

Listening to the super conference over a period of a week was another life changing experience. The conference opened with idea of social conditioning; a concept that I knew little about.

I was awakened to the fact that I had been walking around in a daze. I had no real sense of identity. I didn’t know who I was nor what I was meant to do in this life. I began to question what it was all about.

Not only did the conference touch on pick up topics, which was my primary interest at that time, it also really hammered home this idea of being in the moment, being congruent with myself and simply having fun.

A great deal of the conference discussed the ego, and various ways of breaking free from it. The name, Eckhart Tolle was mentioned a number of times, as was Ayn Rand. I would later learn a great deal from these two incredible teachers and authors.

After listening to the super conference, I noticed that my pick up abilities had improved, and that I was indeed getting success beyond my wildest dreams.

I read further books on the subject and went out most nights of the week. I was drinking almost every night and was ‘loving’ every moment of it, or at least I thought I was.

At the same time, Kellan and I were working hard on our start up idea, while also juggling our internship during the day. Both Tyler and Elliott had discussed how meditation could improve ones health, and could also reduce that amount of sleep people needed. This is exactly what Kellan and I needed.

Tyler discusses Meditation + Power of Now

I therefore began mediating fifteen minutes each night, just focusing on my breath and counting. I didn’t know much about meditation and wasn’t even convinced I was doing it properly. The result was great though, and my full throttle party lifestyle continued.

Elliott discusses Meditation for relationships

I remember watching one of Tyler’s videos, where he discussed the principle that each of us is the average of the five people we spend the most time around. So I realised that if I wanted to improve my life, I needed to either change who those five people were at the time, or to read and immerse myself in quality teachers.

At this point I decided I needed to read more. I was especially interested in reading books on entrepreneurship and start-ups. So I did what any rational twenty-one year old would do and spent $300 on unknown tech start-up books. Most of which have never been opened.

I soon realised my mistake when I came across a book entitled “The First 20 Hours”, by Josh Kaufman, which broke down how to learn anything in twenty hours. Here’s josh at Tedx discussing the concept.

The main thing when learning something new is to find and read the right resources. The guide suggested that you read the top three books on the topic of your choice and then synthesise them all together, to form your basic understanding.

I did this with two main skill sets I wanted to develop further; pick up and starting a business.

My pick up ventures lead me to “The Game”, by Neil Strauss, and subsequently his online society “The Society International”. My business aspirations led me to Napoleon Hill’s early 20th century classic “Think and Grow Rich”.
