This is a continuation of Hunting a Demon, a Choose Your Own Adventure Story started by JF Danskin and written in drabbles and double-drabbles. Find out more here, or return to the previous chapter: ‘Confronting the Demon’.

You retreat from the massive demon. Impachik is four times your height. You’re outmatched — even with sword and shield there would be no hope.

At least you can free the prisoners… Accordingly, you retreat towards the side of the chamber where they’re tied.

Henk’s words return to you: They say that he feeds on the fear that he causes. Certainly, these prisoners are in abject terror.

What would happen with nobody to fear the demon?

Leaping forward, you slash one rope after another. “Run!” you cry. “Get out of here! Back up that tunnel!”

The freed villagers don’t need to be told twice. Thin and ragged, they somehow summon the energy to sprint away.

You circle towards Impachik’s throne and clamber up, now finding yourself face-to-face with him. It’s working — he’s less than double your height now. You laugh in triumph, and he shrinks further…
