Save money on ISBN in the UK.
Help and information regarding the all important ISBN for publishing. Book 4 in the ISBN series.
So you found out that the best option through the official vendor was to buy 10 ISBN for £174.00. Then I told you there was an cheaper route.
What is the cheaper route?
Instead of me going through all the options, I’ll skip straight to the cheapest.
Become a member of the independent publishing network. That is a fancy way of saying buy an ISBN from them once at least.
How much cheaper are they?
Quite a lot. This network was set up to allow self-publishing authors to not suffer to much when buying ISBN. Traditionally publishing authors can just buy an 1000 pack where each ISBN costs bellow £1!
By Nielson's one ISBN costs £93.00, but by The Independent Publishing Network one ISBN costs £30.00.
You do want to note that is will give you a barcode option for £40.00, you only need that if you are physically making the book yourself otherwise the self-publishing platform will add a barcode for you.
The first drawback with them is that 10 ISBN are said to cost £70 (£7 each), compared to £174 (17.40 each) however if there is currently a discount they don’t calculate it the same and you will end up with around £230 (£23.00 each).
Better news, you can directly buy up to 4 at fixed prices.
2 costs £56 (£28 each).
3 costs £78 (£26 each).
4 costs £93 (£23 each).
The point I’m making is, depending on whether their is a discount, Nielson’s can be cheaper. If you don’t want to pay in the 100’s, but you want 3 different formats of your book then you can pay for 3 at a smaller price.
How does this company work, aren’t there drawbacks?
When you publish through a self-publishing network you have to list them as the publisher. It doesn’t need to be said on your book, just in the paperwork when getting it published.
You can however, unlike with the free ISBN, take your book anywhere. You have the control, they only get a tiny bit of credit for selling it too you at a fraction of the cost.
You do need to send a free copy to the British Library. Which, if you are writing for the craft, creativity and passion, should be an upside. The British Library collects every single book out there, (kind of) and yours is among that collection!
This is all possible as they register you through Nielson’s. This means that the pros from publishing through Nielson’s apply here.
Waterstones are alerted to your presence, you can give your book to libraries and (what some would see as less of a pro and more of a con due to money) if the Agency for the Legal Deposit Libraries requests your book you must send 5 copies to them which will be used in libraries. Personally that would be a dream come true, see it as an acknowledgement of your talent and praise on the quality of your book.
There are other sites that offer discounts, but some of those can be scams.
How do I tell if it’s a scam?
