How to OWN YOUR BOOK with an official ISBN in the UK.

So, you know what ISBN’s are, you have decided not to take the free one and now you are wondering where to buy them?
That fully depends on where you are from! There are 150 countries that can supply ISBN to their citizens. If your in the US there are countless places where you can find advice (and this will apply to you but with different prices), if you are in Canada, India, Pakistan or Thailand you get yours for free. If your from any other country then you also have to pay, but even though this is about the UK it does still apply to you when buying your ISBN.
Where can I buy my ISBN from in the UK?
Nielson's. This is the official vendor of ISBN in the UK.
Note that there are over sites and I will go into them in later articles.
So, how much do ISBN cost by this Nielson’s?
At the current time of checking (August 2024) one ISBN costs £93.00.
Are you kidding me??? £93.00 for one singular ISBN??? A number???
This is what every author thinks, or screams, when they hear this. Don’t worry, there is a better option!
What is the better option?
You’ll remember that every version of your book needs a separate ISBN. That means if you are planning on 3 formats, you will need 4 ISBN.
No this doesn’t cost you £372 for 3. It costs £174 for 10.
By buying the 10 pack you are paying £17.40 for one ISBN. A big difference from the £93.00 option!
Don’t worry ISBN don’t have a time limit, so the remaining 6 can be used on other books or special addition versions of your book.
The downside to this is you have to pay £174 short term for a cheaper long term investment. There are other options to pay less in the UK.
What is that option?
You’ll have to read my next article to find out. Oh and there is the obvious of discounts and times when they reduce them. You could also pay for 100 or 1000 but unless your Enid Blyton or Stephan King I wouldn’t recommend that.
