Reflections on beautiful images from the world’s most generous community of photographers

Unsplash.com is my go-to website for beautiful photos. It started in 2013 as a Tumblr blog and is now known as the place for beautiful, free photos. The website is amazing because photographers across the world gift their photos. And anyone can use them for whatever they want. (I recommend reading their license and crediting each photographer.) Their generosity is inspiring, and their photographs are beautiful.

Starting today I’ll share a series of reflections about Unsplash photos. I’ve selected three and this is the first one. My hope is that you gain a new perspective and are inspired in whatever work or creative discipline you practice. Enjoy!

This photo is entitled Step Up. It was taken by Mikito Tateisi in Atami, Japan. You can view the original Unsplash page for this image here. And learn more about Mikito here.

The potential of a child

Potential. That’s the first word that comes to mind after I saw this photograph. It’s striking to see a toddler — in their first years of life — at the bottom of a massive staircase. My optimistic self sees so much potential in that child. And I can’t help but recognize the potential in every child across the world.

I have a nephew who is a toddler. So this image hits home even more. He is a wonderful little boy. Living with so much energy and joy like many children do. I’m grateful for this. When I think of him, I can’t help but realize he is bursting with potential. His life is in the moment, yet he has so much ahead of him. The future holds things unexpected. Yet I have an air of expectancy about him.

You and I — like this child — have an opportunity each day to step up the staircase of life. At times it will feel daunting. We’ll look up the countless steps and struggle to believe in ourselves. But we must remember our potential. Whether we are 3, 30, or 103, the potential of a beautiful and meaningful life is at hand. This photograph — a sign of potential — encourages me. And I hope it does for you as well.
