A “major winter storm” with lots of snow is about to unfold in New England and the Northeast.

Up to 2 feet of snow may fall in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, the Green Mountains of Vermont and other mountainous areas, according to the Weather Prediction Center at the National Weather Service.

Not Much Snow in New England So Far This Season

“Heavy snow totals between 6–12 inches are forecast from central Pennsylvania north into interior Upstate New York. Higher totals between 18–24 inches will be possible for the Catskills and Adirondacks. Portions of central Pennsylvania are most likely to see both accumulating ice and snow,” a center forecast discussion says.

“The snow will expand into interior New England on Friday as the low (storm) moves northward up the coast. Snow totals between 6–12 inches, with locally higher amounts upwards of 18–24 inches for higher elevations in the Berkshires and the Green and White Mountains are expected here as well.”

Snow in New England, Snowfall Maps and a Nor’easter “Likely” This Week

It’s easy to get the latest snowfall forecast maps — typically updated several times daily — on local weather service office websites. Look for the “Winter Weather” image.

The weather service’s Northeast River Forecast Center has a Snow Information Page where you can see the latest snowfall forecast maps for the six New England states and New York state. The website also has lots of other snow-related information.

Here are more maps and images, including one that covers a potential winter storm in the Dec. 22 to 24 time frame and another showing snowfall in the lower 48 states so far this season (since Sept. 30):
