A Dark Beginning
Just under 3 years ago, I was behind bars in a prison cell as a felon with a future as dark and dingy as the cold, gray concrete walls around me. My life was over, I was busted for hacking and cybercrime in my misguided youth. Despite being such, I had no idea that it was just a first step towards the completion of my own redemption arc.
A Glimmer of Hope
From within the dark corners of incarceration however, a light presented itself, in the form of an education program in prison that taught coding. Having no obligations, I committed my full force entirely to studying and mastering the crafts that had given me trouble in the past.
Breaking Free from the Past
As I was released, I rebuilt my life with my new knowledge and determination but I was faced with the challenge of a criminal record. But do you know what, I was not willing to let my past define me.

I had taken my first steps into freelancing and was stuffing my passion into every line of code that I wrote while chipping away at building my portfolio. I worked on earning the trust and respect of clientele one by one who didn’t care about my past and saw my ceiling rather than my deficits.
Discovering a New Path
The more well-known I became, the greater the chances I finding a job at a tech startup that prized and celebrated these same perspectives and skills. I soon was surrounded by a supportive community who shared my belief in giving people a second chance, and in the power of the tech community to change lives.
I now not only have a great software engineer but also mentor to other young women who want to be engineers despite their adversities. I share my journey with them, making them realize that no matter how deep you are pushed into the dirt, there is always a way to climb out.
Giving Back and Moving Forward
Prison was not the end of my story but a major chapter of redemption, I realize now. It taught me resilience, humility, and perspicuity to what I can contribute.

And as I press on in this fast-changing world of tech, I keep reminding myself better things keep coming, keeping the drive and passion in the warmer part of my heart. Each time I write a line of code, it is a remembrance of the infinite amount of second chances we get in life and the boundless potential that is within each of us.
A Message of Hope
If you are someone who has made mistakes in life and struggles to flee the chains of your past, I want to shout from the rooftops — Your Story Is Not Over! Use those challenges to fill you up and drive you forward. Redemption was always a difficult journey, but he was determined to make it worth it.
The same way I brilliantly converted my existence with Code, you can also remodel your energy into your passion and your purpose. We will see if I start from zero too late but I doubt it. I hope everyone understands the power and courage we all have within us even in times it seems impossible.
