I relate to Murakami’s words.
When I decided to get back into writing after a 20-year hiatus, I focused solely on my novel. I haven’t discussed it here yet, but it’s like the novel, The Midnight Library mixed up with a female perspective of the movie, The Family Man, but with multiple alternate realities.
Anyway, I bring this up because it is fiction. I always saw myself as a fiction author.
Now, I’m not so sure.
My novel has a lot of me in it. Also, here in Medium, I am focused primarily on personal stories. (I have also completely loved writing about Medium, stats, and tips, but that’s another thing.)
Once you reach a certain age, you have accumulated a lot of experience. You can dive into your library of memories and explore it through writing. Murakami wrote fiction. Much of his work is magical realism, the genre that best aligns with my novel. So, even though I was not looking forward to a 4:00 am wake-up call, I thought that of all the writers thus far, he was the one who…
