Surangama Sutra Points Toward Awakening

In the Surangama Sutra (a sutra is a scripture containing Buddha’s teachings), Buddha points students to a path toward enlightenment. Ananda, Buddha’s disciple, asks the Master to explain the steps along the path. Buddha describes the samadhi meditation, or meditative state, that one must pass through to awakening. Because Ananda practiced samadhi meditation with only his conscious mind, he was seduced by sensual pleasures. He was distracted from the path because he did not wholly concentrate on his meditation practice.
