I assume you are probably planning for the upcoming long weekend? So where are you heading to?
Are you planning a road-trip and a self-drive? Well, this sounds freaky awesome since the weather is too good to not stay at home.
Well, my to-do list for the long weekend is a bike-ride and photography across the hills. Sounds interesting?
While I was planning for my long weekend, I thought many of you would also be planning the same. And, while I thought I should take the car for the trip, I realized I had to check a lot-of-things beforehand to ensure that my car is all set for the trip. Unfortunately, I figured out that the car is not really in a good shape and I need to take extra care before planning my next trip.
So, I’m all set for the bike-ride and this has brought up this Lesson #16, where I feel the need to let you know about the important things that you must check before planning a car road-trip.
The list is exhaustive to ensure you get used to checking each and everything listed here, in order to develop a good routine checkup for your car.
Before jumping into this list, I hope you are aware of how can you be a smart owner of your car (#2) so that you don’t get duped easily by the mechanic at any workshop (#5).
Essentials
1. Light
This is something that you can’t ride your car without.
Listen to: ’Cause when I need to get home
You’re my guiding light
Check all possible guiding lights: Head light, Fog lamp, Stop lamp, Park light. Ensure that every light is working and double check before stepping out.
2. Tyres
Listen to: Who run the world?
Your car runs on tyres, if these are at fault, your entire ride might not be good enough for your soul. The tyre is not a single component, it is as complex as your noodles. So you got to check the tyre pressure (if the pressure is optimum or not), tyre wear (in case if the tyre has worn out), wheel alignment (there might be a case where the wheels are not aligned), and you also got to keep a spare tyre for unforeseen situations. 3. Oil

Points to You
What makes you alive? Oxygen? What makes your car alive? Oil.
One of the most important essentials for your car. Always, always, always, keep an eye on the engine oil, power steering fluid, coolant antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid (Read Lesson #15: How Shall I Fix My Car’s Transmission? Repair or Replace or Rebuild?), windscreen washer fluid. If you see there is a need to refill, or there is a leak, head on to a nearby workshop (Read Lesson #12: The Ultimate Guide To Select The Right Car Workshop)
4. Battery
Listen to: I can’t tell where the journey will end
But I know where to start
It’s always good to have a plan B in cases where plan A doesn’t work. And, with the battery in your car, you always have a running money. Make sure that your battery is not more than 2 years old. Get it replaced before it’s aging too old. Also, do see the sign for any crucial leakage.
5. Brakes
Listen to: You could be my luck
Even in a hurricane of frowns
I know that we’ll be safe and sound
You can’t step up further and you can’t even run away, that’s what the brakes are for, to ensure that you’re safe and sound, to ensure that you apply at just the right time. Check your brakes for any wear and tear sign, for any leakage. Check the brake pads in case if they loosen up.
