The season kicked off last January 11 after hosting a two day off-season invitational tournament, which saw SteamedBun winning the first leg and SpamAndRice dominating the second. “Season 2 is huge because I feel that we’re able to create a more diverse meta. It might not show right away, but I feel that these massive changes sets us up for success because the game became deeper and more possibilities are unlocked for players compared to last season,” Nix Eniego, Axie Infinity Philippine Lead, told the Axie Archives. “I can’t speak for the entire team, but we’re generally positive and looking forward to getting more feedback from the community! Excited to see which metas will emerge this season.”

Majority of the cards were reworked ahead of season two as the previous season saw only a few team compositions dominate the leaderboards. The team is hopeful that the changes will bring a more diverse mix of teams for this season. The card changes got some members of the community excited for the season.

“I’m excited for s2 as this will bring diversity to the community regarding with the possible metas, as well as the 4 eras that we will be actually looking forward to,” content creator, Wiggles, said of the upcoming season.

Axie Infinity pro players are also excited to test out the builds they’ve been theory crafting in order to gain a spot on the leaderboards.

“Card game players always love big patches, I’m excited for a fresh new meta,” QU3ST pro player, SpamAndRice, shared. “My preparation is the same as always, watch a lot of game play, and test all my ideas! Should be a fun season ahead.”

Some have big goals for themselves and for their team.

“My goal for Season 2 is to finish in the top 10 with the four of us from METAT8 JAPAN,” De-Hi of METAT8 explained. “We built our team right after the [card leaks], but we are now researching to make it even stronger. We have a time frame of Rare, Epic, and Mystic, but at the end of the day, we want to get TOP!”

While others are looking to develop new talent in Lunacia.

“The first professional Axie Infinity team in Japan [has been created and] I will serve as an advisor there,” METAT8’s Mino announced. “I will be involved in the activities to promote Axie Infinity. Watch out for that!”

And a lot can relate to the excitement OGK is feeling to begin the grind.

“I can’t wait! My first competitive season of Axie was S17 of V2,” OG Esports founder and renowned caster, OGK nostalgically shared. “I love the thrill of pushing the leaderboard to win prizes. Pumped to get things going for S2!”

Eras are a new mechanic that splits the season into time periods. Each Era has a restriction on the runes and charms that can be used during that period, as well as rewards players at a per Era basis. There will also be a new daily login rewards system, and new rank-up and crafting rewards. The launch of the season also brings in a new bug-themed live-ops event.
