Welcome to Be Unique

We are on a mission to publish stories that are different from what’s already published on Medium. Here, at Be Unique, we encourage people to tell stories. Stories that can create a difference or start a discussion on topics no one talks about. If you think you can bring about a positive change, then you have come to the right place!

Read till the end to know us inside out…

1.) Why us?

Here at Be Unique, everyone gets an equal opportunity as a writer. Whether you’re a top writer or an aspiring one, it doesn’t matter. We love to give every writer an equal opportunity to publish their stories.

2.) What makes us 'Unique’?

Our audiences are tired of the repetitive content on Medium. We now want to provide them with fresh outlooks and unique approaches.

We want articles that can create a difference or start a discussion.

3.) Our Turn-around time

We revert back within 4 days after your submissions. You’d always be updated if your story has been accepted or rejected. In case of rejection, we inform you of the reason for the same. Once your story has been accepted, it is scheduled to be published within another 24 hours.

Note:-
We publish 3 stories per day, avoiding mass publishing so that we don’t spam our readers and we don’t review submissions or writer requests on Sundays…

4.) Align with our Themes

Our publication’s tags if you believe it’s important for curation:

Mindset shift, Philosophy, Self-awareness, Perspective, Change

But, we are not just looking at these limited topics!

We do believe that it’s important to have proper themes and subjects but the name of our publication clears that misconception already.

We do not like to restrict our writers to a niche and want to give them the freedom to write about any subject that they find unique. Rather, we look forward to diverse stories from writers all over the world.

We look for great stories rather than great themes.

What we are looking for?

I think one of the major reasons for the confusion amongst the writers can be this particular line in our guidelines — “We do not have a niche”.

Writers love being given the freedom to write anything they want, without limiting them to a particular topic or a niche. So let me clarify…

Yes, we don’t have a niche. But we do have a theme.

Confused??? Let me explain…

What this means is that your article can be on any topic — relationships, mindset change, equality, psychology, sexuality, mental health, and so on…

But the only twist is that your story should be told in 3 ways:

  1. Addressing an issue and bringing change in society,
  2. Writing stories that compel readers to think out-of-the-box, or
  3. A well narrated personal story that gives us a new perspective or a lesson.

Now enough of the talks, let me share with you some examples which were also our Editors’ Picks:

My suggestion for top picks:

1.) How “Accept Me the Way I Am” Became the Most Toxic Statement I Ever Heard by

(A story about bringing change)

2.) Standing at Concerts: Is It Really Necessary? by

(Thinking out of the box story)

3.) Growing Up With a Gorgeous Mother Made Me Hate The Beauty by

(Personal Narration)

4.) How to See and Understand Life in A Healthy Dose of “Grey” by

(Philosophy)

5.) Rules for submission

  • Submitting only Unpublished Drafts

Medium’s algorithm favors fresh stories, and our homepage is sorted by date of when the article was published (not when it was accepted). The longer a story’s original publish date be, the poorer it will perform.

  • We take the freedom to make minor changes to make it more appealing to the audience and a higher chance of getting curated.
  • We don’t encourage short titles. For example: ‘Change’, ‘True Love’, ‘Better to be alone’, etc. Try to be more descriptive.
  • You should always consider adding credit to the Images/stock you use in your story.
  • Stories like: “I earned XXX amount of money and here’s how you can do it…” or “… can change your life forever” are rejected the moment we receive them.
  • Your story must have an opening and a conclusion.
  • We don’t accept poetries nor Haiku’s
  • Only stories more than 3min+ read are allowed.
  • Listicles in the title itself like: “5 ways or 10 things” are not accepted here.
  • You’re asked to submit only one article at a time.

7.) Submitting your draft

All those who are new to Medium and do not know how to submit their articles to a publication are requested to read this part. If you are an experienced user on Medium, you already know how it works 😉

  1. Open the story/draft that you want to submit. Click the ( ) icon at the top, then click on Edit story to enter the edit mode.

2. Now click on the ( ) button again which would be present in the top-right corner of the page to open your story settings. [Just refer to the image above]

3. Select Add to the publication from the drop-down list.

4. Choose, Be Unique and then click Save. It’s that simple!

See, what other writers are talking about us:

I also published a piece with Be Unique when I first started, and it turned out to be my best performing article! I can only imagine being inundated with submissions, the bigger publications cannot spare the time to respond to each and every one♡ ” —

Join a publication that makes you feel like you are at an open house. They will blow your socks off. Typically publications like Be Unique are a great area for new writers on medium. You should write for these publications if you feel connection and collaboration is your priority” —

The title of the publication caught my eye and then when scanning through some of the stories, I was drawn even more in.” —

Rejecting a piece is hard for us too. We try to be as transparent as we can be and if you follow up on our guidelines then your chances of rejection would be far lesser.

If you loved what we’re doing, spread the love and tell more writers about us. Read other’s work too and encourage them.
It’s time to write great stories and not just good ones.

You can follow us on Twitter here or can join our Slack group too!
