— Is a hybrid considered an electric car?

When talking about electric vehicles, “cars powered by electric battery” is the most general picture for most people. But in fact, there are different types in this category. So, let me give a deeper insight into the current types of EVs and clarify the confusing concept of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles.

Hopefully, this article could help you when choosing your own EV.

First, let’s make it clear what EV includes or is divided. 🧐

Basically, there are two types of Electric Vehicles, namely AEVs and PHEVs.

AEVs stands for all-electric vehicles. As its name suggests, AEVs are only powered by electricity. Depends on different battery capacities, the driving distance of AEVs ranges from 60 to 120 miles. Only limited models could reach up to 300 miles. These numbers are improving day by day, so bear with us, we will witness this all together! Considering the time of recharging, people may spend approximately a whole day with Level 1 charging; or complete within 30 minutes in the case of fast charging. By the way, as a quick side note the always talked Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) are belong to the AEVs frame.

AEVs take a high position in the market. One of the most famous brands, Tesla, provides different models of AEVs, such as the well-known Model X and Model S.

On the other hand, PHEV’s is the abbreviation of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Since the power system of PHEVs combines an internal combustion engine, running on gasoline and electric battery, they have for shorter ranges from 6 to 40 miles when running on electricity. If the battery is empty, then PHEVs switch over to the gasoline-powered engine. Smart as you shall find the keyword “plug-in” in its name. YES. The electric motor could be recharged as AEVs. Although PHEVs are not as green as AEVs, the flexibility to use a two-in-one power system makes them quite popular on the market.

Another famous automobile manufacturer, BMW offers many options for PHEVs, such as the BMW 330e. Others like Skoda Superb iV, Hyundai Ioniq Plug-In Hybrid, and Audi Q5 TFSI are also included in this frame.

You might be quite confused with all these EV jargon, but don`t worry. One important thing for you to remember is that these two types of power systems are obviously different. PHEVs still count partly on gasoline as conventional automobiles, with a supplement of electricity on driving, while AEVs are fully electrified, currently regarded as the cleanest vehicle for transportation.

Now, hopefully, we are all clear with the different EV abbreviations.

You may ask, how to define a hybrid electric vehicle. 🚙

Let`s put it in this way. The hybrid electric vehicle has a similar power system as PHEV, while the former one recharges its battery with the gasoline engine help. That is to say: the battery power cannot be plugged in.

Therefore, although the hybrid electric vehicle is named “electric”, it could hardly be included in EVs. Since the power of its electric battery does not generate electricity at all.

With the spreading concept of moving green, AEVs and PHEVs are highly welcomed by a huge number of people. Yet, they usually meet with problems when charging their EVs. For instance, have no clues to find one or too far away to reach one. To solve that, several platforms that could help EV owners to find and filter charging stations. Our EV specialized App, Bluedot, supports you in this way and even helps you find out a shared private charger.
