Psychological capital: A review and synthesis

My experience in corporate America and my transition to academia have taught me how important research is, but not in the way academics think. Of course, academics need to conduct research, and the research should be presented in a form easily digestible for the nonacademic. This publication aims to provide an overview of one academic article in less than three minutes.

Newman et al. wrote a comprehensive review of the existing literature on Psychological Capital (PsyCap) in 2014. Due to its connections to employee attitudes, behaviors, and performance, psychological capital has garnered a lot of attention. In spite of this, there’s still some debate about what exactly PsyCap is, how it’s measured, and how it affects results for individuals, teams, and organizations. Their article argues for more research in several key areas, which is one of the hallmarks of researchers — they love to point out where additional research is needed. A person’s psychological capital (PsyCap) is their confidence, optimism, hope, and resilience at work, that contribute to their performance and well-being.
