Welcome to this third Know Your Orchestrator (KYO) segment. This initiative is being led by the team here at Live Pioneers with the main objective of introducing the technical and professional profiles of each Orchestrator in the Livepeer project, as well as highlighting any goals they may have. We hope this will help foster ties between Delegators and their favorite Orchestrators.

If you still do not know what Livepeer is, you can read our article here:

🎤 Ad-astra Interview

1/ Live Pioneers: How did you get involved in running a Livepeer Orchestrator? Do you have a team assisting you, or are you a solo operator?

Ad-astra: I found out about Livepeer from a friend and was captured by its gravity immediately. Running an orchestrator was not a large leap for me because I had experience with video transcoding from running plex servers for family and friends.

I am a solo operator with a working partnership with John | EliteEncoder on my EU node.

This is one of Ad-astra’s servers, and next to it we have Teddy, his pet … also his node manager :-)

2/ Live Pioneers: What’s your technical background? And how do you use your technical skills in your Orchestrator role?

Ad-astra: My technical skills are self-taught with more formal training in accounting and finance. I am always curious to learn new things which carried me through the many hurdles I have faced while running my orchestrator.

3/ Live Pioneers: What features of Livepeer can you highlight that make a difference in the web3 ecosystem?

Ad-astra: The community is one of the best I have been a part of. The open and strong community drives a focused effort to help all orchestrators provide great service to the network.

4/ Live Pioneers: How would you describe Livepeer in simple terms?

Ad-astra: Video compute for everyone.

5/ Live Pioneers: How did you first find out about blockchain technology, and what prompted you to get involved in crypto?

Ad-astra: Started with mining on Ethereum and a lengthy list of alt coins.

I love the community part of crypto and the exploration of new ways to do things. I believe the journey with blockchain technology is still in the beginning and has many more great things to provide to the world.

6/ Live Pioneers: How did you find out about Livepeer?

Ad-astra: From a friend that also loves crypto.

This is one of his AI nodes … Ad-astra is a guy who loves black & white setups!

7/ Live Pioneers: What was your first experience with Livepeer like, and what convinced you to take on the Orchestrator role?

Ad-astra: I began by reading the docs, an article by Nico on setting up an orchestrator then came to Discord when I had more questions. Vires-in-numeris, Nico and Yondon helped me get my feet planted and more comfortable running my orchestrator in those first few months. My first question, like many, was related to ffmpeg complaining.

8/ Live Pioneers: Can you briefly summarize what your daily work as an Orchestrator looks like? What types of maintenance, monitoring, and time commitments are required in running a node after the initial setup? Is it a full-time or a part-time job?

Ad-astra: Daily work varies but I check in on logs and streams history in Grafana most days. The time commitment to run an orchestrator does not have to be significant but is also not set and forget.

9/ Live Pioneers: What changes are you eager to see come to the Livepeer ecosystem? And how could this benefit you as an Orchestrator?

Ad-astra: The AI subnet has been really fun to work on and building new “AI miners” has been really fun. Brings back memories of the good old days of shuffling around hardware between miners with Ethereum mining.

FFmpeg upgrade will also be great for the network to unlock new hardware and new codecs.

This is Ad-astra’s workspace, he is passionate about video games too, one of his favorite games right now is Rocket League.

10/ Live Pioneers: How would you describe your long-term vision for Livepeer, as well as the web3 ecosystem?

Ad-astra: I want to see Livepeer continue growing and enabling creators with the ability to explore their dreams in a way that provides them ownership in the content and community they create.

I expect web3 to continue to break down barriers to allow everyone to own their past and future.

11/ Live Pioneers: Now to finish, we will ask you a bonus question that could be interesting for the community… which is your favorite travel destination?

Ad-astra: Anywhere with a beach or escape to nature.
