Meet the winners of the 2022 Digital Storytelling Festival
The Digital Storytelling Festival’s second edition encouraged people to create digital stories from open access cultural heritage collections.
This year’s Festival kicked off with an Opening Gala, packed with creativity inspiration, handy tips and vibrant conversations. (If you missed it, don’t worry — catch up with everything here.)
As soon as the Gala had ended, story submissions began arriving in our inbox — and just like last year, we were bowled over by the imagination and quality of the entries.
So, who won? Here are the entries most praised by the Festival Jury and you, our readers.
People’s Choice AND Social Media winner 🏆🏆
The evocative Instagram story Promenade Dress by Nino Papashvili, based on the famous painting The Travelling Companions by Augustus Leopold Egg, picked up two trophies in this year’s contest, winning both the People’s Choice and Social Media categories. Well done, Nino!
What our jurors said: “The imagined monologue of the sitter is a very creative way of approaching the image and bringing a potential story to life” and “a proper story that is fun and easy to read.”.
Social media — runner-up 🥈
The story of Ravananugraha by Srushti Goud explores the iconography of Hindu temple sculptures in a wonderfully entertaining animated film.
What our jurors said: “Very charming animation. Beautiful in its simplicity.” and “Great animation style and accessible language.”.
Creative editorial — winner 🏆
The Life of a Quonset Hut by Kerry Ulm is a fascinating story about a unique solution to a housing problem in Colorado.
What our jurors said: “I like the use of colloquial language and informal voice.” and “I like this one a lot… the objects can take the centre stage.”.
Creative editorial — runner-up 🥈
The evocative film Gustaf Larsson — a farm worker’s life by Josefine Svensson, Curator at Sörmland Museum, examine the traces of a 19th-century farm worker’s life.
What our jurors said: “A beautiful story to watch, and the use of heritage objects is beautiful.” and “it manages to seemingly effortlessly combine the personal story with the wider social picture.”.
