How I made my first $5000 in crypto.

Around the end of 2014, while I was looking up some ‘magic potion’ online, I found myself on the darker side of the internet. The e-commerce websites out there are similar but with way better customer service.

I had heard about Bitcoin before but didn’t understand much, there was no drive either. This time was different; Bitcoins were standing between me and the ‘magic potion’.

Legality was never an issue back then, but I had so many questions — Where do I buy from? How do I buy the coin? Is it the real Bitcoin? I had to get around this.

Bitcointalk wasn’t so crowded back then and luckily I came across some genuine help.

1 BTC was valued at $500 in 2014, but even back then you could tell how huge it’s going to be. It was just a small transaction, but my first cryptocurrency transaction, it didn’t feel any different from a regular money transfer on the surface.

Although behind the scenes, everything was different! Its fundamentals and technology challenge our current system, and it worked! A lot better, in my opinion.

Today,1 BTC is around $11,000 and is always fluctuating.

Now I wanted to get my hands on more of Bitcoin and other alternative currencies which were gaining momentum at that time. I didn’t have anything to trade with so I figured I had to earn cryptocurrency organically. To get started, I had to buy-in or work for it. When I mined my first coin, I used what I had, a mid-range graphics card. It paid for itself and more!

Here’s how I made my first $5000 in cryptocurrency.

Mining

Since the currency is decentralized its necessary for miners to exist. If this sounds confusing, check out this super simple explanation.

To be a miner you need processing power. Cryptocurrency miners share their power to the network and are rewarded with tokens of that particular network.

You’ll find a ton of content on how to get started, optimize and earn by mining. If you have some hardware and want to get started right away, check out what to mine.

It’s hard to say how much you can earn by mining as the tokens constantly fluctuate in price, but a combination of trading and mining helped me gain better profits.

Trading

If you like playing around with stocks, Crypto will give you better returns. The average return on stock investments is around 15% to 20% whereas trading cryptocurrency can easily get you return up to 300%.

I once managed to get a broker cut of $800 for a profitable trade suggestion.
But keep in mind that trading is high risk, high reward. Play with what you can stand to lose.

Binance and CoinBase are good exchanges to start with. Although I recommend WazirX if you aren’t restricted by your geographic location. Their user interface is amazing, considering the fact that most trading apps are a bit complex. Blockchain games are something I’ve gotten into quite recently. I see huge potential in it. There’s a high probability that majority games will eventually integrate cryptocurrency as it’s just so convenient for developers and gamers both.

What is a Crypto Wallet?

A bunch of code compiled to create a secure digital record that stores, sends, and receives digital currency.

How Does it Work?

Your wallet stores keys (Account Info), balance, transaction history, and interacts with the chain to perform a task (deposit or withdrawal).

What are Keys?

Public Keys (Account Number)

Used to identify your account, this can be shared to receive funds.

Private Keys (Signature)

These are used to approve a transaction and identify the owner of a public key. DONT SHARE!

What Does it Look Like?

Software: An application on the web, your mobile phone, tab or computer.
Psychical: Electronic wallets similar to USB drives and paper wallets!

Paper wallets are printouts of your public and private keys. You can use them by entering these keys in the application or scanning the QR code on them.

Types

Single Currency:

Exclusively stores only one token on it. These are usually wallets offered by the blockchain itself.
e.g.A Tron wallet will only store TRX.

Multi-Currency:

You’ll mostly find these on exchanges where you deal with multiple currencies which are all stored in one wallet.

The application of Blockchain Technology.

Firstly we need to understand that Blockchain Technology is still in its early stage. Its application and use cases will increase and diversify as we develop and use Technology.

“ Technology evolves over time”

A synonymous example would be the internet. In its early stages, all it did was send 5MB in 24hrs and you would just hope no one shuts off your system during a download.

It faced a lot of criticism, mainly from industries it would disrupt. It also faced distrust from people who were uneasy with change and of course fake news! (It was a thing back then too)

Today we live with the evolved internet. It’s wireless, faster than ever, and safe enough for you to store and share your digital assets on. If people back then decided “there is no point in developing the technology”, would you be reading this today?

You will find numerous explanations for Blockchain Technology & its uses online. Here is another perspective, because everyone is different.

Everything you own, money, property, cars written in ledgers(notebooks).
A banknote has no value unless the serial number on it is entered into the ledger of the National Reserve. (Basically, that’s how money is made)

Let us call them notebooks, for now, so we all are on the same page.

These are three different scenarios where distributed ownership is handled by the Blockchain. This is possible with our traditional system, but the blockchain avoids unnecessary effort & friction.

Blockchain is the buzz everywhere now, inevitably it has entered the gaming industry. It’s not only changing the relationship between games & gamers but the entire fundamentals of the industry.

We gamers have been dealing with the concept of in-game currency since the early 2000s.

Games with mass user base like Clash of Clans, Candy Crush Saga, Farmville, etc. have collectively introduced about 500 Million users to this concept!
Since crypto is not restricted to any platform or game and can be used anywhere. It’s apt for gamers and developers to move to crypto.

How does it change anything? They are all just virtual coins!!

Tokens

Tron(TRX), Ethereum(ETH), EnjinCoin(ENJ) are the most used in the
block-chain gaming scene right now, other players like Abyss are not far behind.

These tokens(due to high liquidity) can be traded in exchanges or sold for any form of fiat currency.
**Some block-chain games still have an in-game currency, this is done to add a layer in between, which helps in user retention.

Fungible: In-game currencies, virtual goods, mineable resources, and recurring assets

Non Fungible: Bespoke equipment, Unique Traits, One of a kind elements.

Non-Tradable: Time-bound or Player bound assets.
(e.g)You are a pro at PUBG, so buying the season pass is an amazing deal for you. The pass will remain as a stagnant asset and will expire in the allotted time.

The benefits acquired from the pass can be in either form.

Suppose we integrated Tron(TRX) as a token in the game. You buy slick dance moves or the limited edition Spider-man costume for your character, You spend 2000TRX on each of these assets. These assets are now stored in your wallet as non-fungible(Unique)tokens. Since you have purchased them from the developers, You own them.

A few weeks later, Its Halloween night and you’re in the mood for some new spooky attire. Now, you can either buy your Halloween costume with some more TRX or sell your limited edition in the asset market to the highest bidder,
It is possible to earn extra 1000TRX on that limited edition costume.
