FROM THE EDITOR’s DESK

Dear Readers,

I am extremely pleased to bring out the inaugural issue of HydRAW Zine, the e-magazine initiative of HydRAW (Hyderabad Readers and Writers). We are taking a humble step in bringing out a fountain of talent of the HydRAW group — our little world which feels like a family — their reading lists, their write-ups, their views/discussion, out to the entire world.

Likewise, we want to expand our family that is so far confined to our WhatsApp group. As we go along, we will take with us non-HydRAW members also. For now, this is a humble attempt of 2 articles, 2 stories and 2 poems.

I realized that many magazines or journals that I came across are but placeholders of art corrupted and it greatly disoriented me. That led to myself starting this venture along with Kalam Babu. And credit is due to Prof. Manu Manguttu for suggesting the magazine name. HydRAW zine will always be an authentic expression of literary confabulations.

In this issue, we put together simple articles by Pratima Jaidev and Naseha Sameen on women, as our tribute to the International Women’s day. The poem by Krishna Ahir on Metamorphic women speaks a thousand words; it is followed by a sweet poem on biryani in Hindi by Swapnil Saurav. The short stories are by me and Drishika Shah who is only 13 years with a great potential as a writer and poet. When she shared the story in our WhatsApp group, I immediately decided that it should be published in our magazine to inspire many kids and teenagers who aspire to be writers but are scared or lack the confidence.

This tiny ray of light of literary adventures that starts from HydRAW members, I hope, will become huge flood lights as we expand our community. I am looking out for relatively topical issues in the category of poems, short stories/flash fiction and articles. There is no deadline as such for an entry, we will accumulate submissions and publish them quarterly. If your piece misses the deadline for an edition, we will use it for the next quarterly edition. You can send your entries to hydrawzine@gmail.com

I have just completed a supernatural thriller novel, Strutting Lightbugs in collaboration with Kalam Babu; it was launched on 18th April 2021. I am also a jury member in the ongoing StoryMirror-HydRAW interactive novel contest and have been conducting literary events for school and college students. Given my day job and literary preoccupations, I felt that it was practical to start HydRAW Zine as a quarterly magazine. Once we are staffed up and have more bandwidth and resources, we will do it more frequently and add more categories to the magazine.

Best Wishes,
Lavanya Nukavarapu
