At Metta, we’re introducing our work — supporting startups, industry, and government with sustainable technology-driven innovation — but also the amazing team behind it all.

At Metta, we pay close attention to who we work with and the same goes for the Metta team. As such, we are making an ongoing effort to highlight the people behind Metta in our Meet the Team series.

It’s been great to work with Nicole Whitelaw, our new Marketing Lead at Metta over the past few months. In the latest part of our Meet the Team series, we learn more about Nicole, and why she is excited about Metta.

About Me -

  • Favourite place in the world: A hard choice between Queenstown NZ, Sydney, and Croatia
  • Favourite food: Most Asian cuisine! Japanese and Thai food are two of my favourites
  • Favourite downtime activity: There’s plenty — Gym, Dancing, Swimming, Cooking

Q1: Hi Nicole! 👋 How would you describe what you do at Metta? What are you currently working on?

A: Hi! I’m the Marketing Lead at Metta, which means I oversee the daily running of marketing activities for the company. I have lots of responsibilities, including managing all of our social media channels, our medium blog and our podcast — as well as creating and executing marketing campaigns throughout the year and helping organise external events.

I’m currently working on finishing up Season 2 of our Metta Talks Podcast. Our podcast is available on most platforms (SpotifyGoogleAmazonApple), and each episode we invite industry guests to come and chat to us about all things sustainability, tech and innovation. A few of our guests include; Hampus Jakobsson, General Partner at Pale Blue Dot, Jonathan Withey, Head of Business Development at Planet Mark, and Lise Alm, Chief Strategy Officer at Worldfavor.

Q2: How did you first get interested in the tech / startup ecosystem? How did you come to join the team at Metta?

A: I suppose I first got into the startup space back in 2017, working freelance for a small company who supported women entrepreneurs in the tech space, and provided them a safe community to talk, meet up and ask for business advice. Tech companies are at the forefront of innovation and change, and Metta was interesting to me because of the focus around sustainability and climate change.

I then moved to London in April 2018 to take a marketing / Head of Partnerships role for a 5 person startup which specialised in contextually relevant advertising in Digital out of home — basically, billboard advertisements for brands which would change their messaging depending on external factors including time, location and weather. This really got me interested in the tech space and being in a co-working space surrounded by so many companies working on such fascinating tech innovations and products.

I then worked for a 4 person start up for women in tech, supporting women entrepreneurs and business owners, and was responsible for delivering the Company’s Annual Conference, which brought together all of these women in a 2 day conference filled with talks and workshops.

After gaining all of this experience, the opportunity to work at Metta came up at the start of 2022 and I couldn’t pass it up. I feel like all of my previous roles, working in marketing, tech, for small startups have provided me with the experience I needed to fulfil this role at Metta.

Q3: Within this ecosystem, what is something people are not paying enough attention to?

A: The lack of women and female leadership in the space. I wouldn’t say that people aren’t paying attention to it, but there needs to be even more emphasis and attention put on it and working to improve gender equality here.

We’re incredibly lucky to have a female Co-Founder and Director, as well as a team that’s currently over 75% women — however, I’d go as far to say that this is pretty much unheard of in the tech/startup world (at the moment). It’s brilliant to see so many startups coming up which have female CEOs and also communities and events for women in the space.

Q4: What’s been the best part of working at Metta?

A: 100% the team! We’ve got such a lovely group of hard working, dedicated people all who instil the core company values of Metta. Everyone is super genuine, and more than happy to go over and above to help each other. On top of that, we’ve got a really diverse and inclusive culture, and I’m so excited to see that grow and flourish even further as we welcome more people to the Metta team!

Q5: What do you find most exciting about where Metta is going?

A: I think the rate of company growth is really exciting and something to be proud of and shout about. The team has grown by 200% in the last year alone! I’m looking forward to the team continuing to grow, as well as working on new marketing campaigns for next year, and our Season 3 of Metta Talks Podcast.

Q6: Tell us more about your activities outside of work. Outside of work, what’s a project that you’ve enjoyed the most or are most proud of?

A: I have always loved travelling and exploring new places, and always been fascinated with different countries, cultures and ways of life.

I also love keeping up with my fitness and enjoy going to the gym and trying out new classes. I also enjoy trying new restaurants and coffee shops around my city.
