It’s time we say goodbye to 2018, but not before reminiscing about OPO.js #8, and all we had in store for the last meetup of the year of the Porto JavaScript Community.

That’s so well summarised, I almost could just stop here. But I won’t 😆

This event was a big milestone, again clocking at 150 attendees, regardless of the train strikes and flooding rain. People were just set on coming.

“@oponetwork We caught tons of unexpected traffic, but we’re en route to #opojs! Late, but see you in a bit!” — You gotta love the commitment, moments like this make it worth it đŸ’Ș

Pizza.js 🍕

We wanted to go big for this last meetup of the year, so we had a pizza party for 110 people đŸ€ŻđŸ•đŸ”„

This was a smashing success, and a great chance to socialise, meet new people and exchange ideas. A keeper for the next meetups!

Book giveaways 🎁

Our official t-shirt 💛

A new addition to the OPO.js experience was the book giveaways, borrowed from our OPO.design meetups. We’re always trying to enable people to grow, so if you’d like to get in on these giveaways, be sure to follow us around the web, we’ll keep having initiatives like these.

The talks 🗣

Following some trends we’re seeing, this meetup was around the distributed and decentralised web, topics ranging from DApp development, decentralised package managers and the role browsers can take in enabling this future web. If this peaked your curiosity, be sure to watch the talks below.

AndrĂ© Cruz, CTO at MOXY — “True Serverless”

AndrĂ© Cruz brought us “True Serverless”, in which he shows us how quickly one can turn a local web app into an offline first, decentralised app, with synchronised state across devices, all without servers, or blockchains for that matter. A truly mind-blowing concept for any web developer looking to go beyond “just the cloud”.

AndrĂ© Garzia, Tech Speaker at Mozilla — “Libdweb: towards a user agent that fosters decentralization”

AndrĂ© Garzia talked about “Libdweb: towards a user agent that fosters decentralization”, which shed some light on what Firefox’s libdweb is trying to accomplish, and the role browser vendors can have on enabling the dweb ecosystem. If you’d like to help shape what could eventually become a standard of the dweb, this talk is a must watch.

Alex Potsides, Core JavaScript Developer at Protocol Labs — “NPM on IPFS”

Finally, Alex Potsides talked about his adventures in building “NPM on IPFS”, the architecture behind it, and the possibilities that it brings. If building distributed apps and package managers gets your juices flowing, you can’t miss this one.

As usual, we’ve released the photo album on Facebook, so be sure to show us some ❀ by liking the photos and tagging yourself.

Porto Tech & Creative calendar 🗓

Another topic we talked about at OPO.js, was the monthly calendar of creative and tech events in Porto.

We send out a newsletter with all key events in Porto every month, so you don’t have to follow a thousand different pages. You’re welcome!

If you want to follow the calendar, be sure to join the newsletter.

That’s it, folks. This was the last meetup of 2018, see you next year, we’re going big in 2019, stay tuned for moređŸ€˜

A big thanks to ScaleUp Porto, PĂłlo Zero, our speakers, and everyone who helped make this awesome meetup for the Porto JavaScript Community a reality.

OPO.network and its meetups are supported by the Call for Activities initiative by ScaleUp Porto.
