Phase zero of ethereum 2.0, which enables Proof of Stake, is targeted to launch on the 3rd of January 2020.

That would be precisely 11 years after Bitcoin’s genesis block was launched on the 3rd of January 2009, with Justin Drake, an eth 2.0 researcher, citing the 11th Bitcoin anniversary as one reason for choosing that specific date.

He said they’re on track for phase zero spec freeze this June 30th, in about two weeks.

Thus, for new realistic targets, there are two milestones. First, the deposit contract is to launch ahead of the genesis block to allow validators to make deposits.

They’re hoping at least 2 million eth will be deposited, with a deposit contract ceremony to be held at Devcon in Japan “so that we can all agree on the address of the deposit contract and avoid scam deposit contracts,” Drake said.

The second milestone is the genesis block launch on the day Satoshi Nakamoto did so for bitcoin.

That would be soon after Christmas and after the new year, so symbolizing a new beginning for Ethereum.

This would allow three months of deposits to accumulate and 7 months from today for at least two clients to reach production status, Drake said.

EF-Supported Teams: Development Report 2019 Pt. 1

Posted by Ethereum Foundation Team on June 21st, 2019

Over the last year, developers and researchers supported by Ethereum Foundation have kept their heads down and continued to produce at a staggering pace.

Their focus has remained on their work, and together we’re all building a more complete Ethereum. Ethereum regular all-team update series is relaunching in a changed and ever growing ecosystem. Ethereum features larger dApp, developer and user communities than ever before, the network has continued to improve, and steady progress has been made on initiatives large and small.

While many teams do release their own well-rounded updates, Ethereum team thought it appropriate to bring the community the latest from many of the teams supported by the Foundation:

Lighthouse Update #12:

  • Up-to-date with spec v0.6.3.
  • RESTful HTTP API merged into eth2.0-spec.
  • Significantly improved metrics and monitoring.
  • Lots of progress on Discv5.
  • Fuzzing Lighthouse.
  • BLS standardisation and optimisation.
  • More dedicated Lighthouse resources.

The 4000 signatures are aggregated in less than 900 milliseconds with an average per-node communication cost of 56KB.

Hayden Adams. Uniswap — An Automated Decentralized Exchange for Ethereum: The concept of a decentralized exchange has been a holy grail in the cryptocurrency space for many years. Many attempts have been made, but most decentralized exchanges suffered from central points of failure, poor user experience and little liquidity.mLaunched during Ethereum’s DevCon 2018, Uniswap is one of the first fully decentralized exchanges and managed to become the leading DEX very fast. The host was joined by Uniswap Founder Hayden Adams to discuss Uniswap’s unique model, the different participants in the protocol and the importance of decentralized exchanges for the blockchain space.

Topics they discussed in this episode:

  • How Hayden’s exploratory project to learn smart contract development took off and became Uniswap
  • How Uniswap works and its different participants
  • The advantage of an automated exchange instead of using order books
  • The role of liquidity providers in Uniswap
  • Feedback loops that can make Uniswap markets popular or collapse
  • The challenging economics of liquidity shares
  • Addressing Arthur Hayes’ criticism of decentralized exchanges
  • Why Uniswap didn’t create a tokeneconomic monetization model

Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin said that Facebook’s Libra is “like a centralized wolf in a decentralized sheep’s clothing” in an article published on tech news outlet Quartz on June 21.

In his article, Lubin notes that Libra’s white paper describes feelings common among many in the cryptocurrency community.
