Polkadot Is Ready for Parachain Launch, Auction Dates Proposed

Almost exactly five years after the vision of a heterogeneous multichain framework was first outlined in the Polkadot Whitepaper (aka the Polkadot Paper), parachains are now officially ready for launch on Polkadot. The news that Polkadot is now technically capable of supporting its first parachains, announced by Polkadot founders Gavin Wood and Robert Habermeier, was followed shortly by a motion for Polkadot Council to open up the network’s first parachain slot auctions, proposed to begin on November 11th, 2021.

Parachains are the diverse, specialized blockchains that connect to the Polkadot Relay Chain and constitute the ‘multichain’ aspect of Polkadot’s groundbreaking multichain architecture. They represent the final piece of core technology outlined in the Polkadot Whitepaper, and their launch marks the last stage of Polkadot’s multi-phase launch process, which began on May 26th, 2020 with the launch of the initial, proof-of-authority version of the Polkadot Relay Chain.

If approved by Polkadot’s on-chain governance, the initial auctions will take place on Polkadot as follows (note that dates are approximate):

Batch 1

Rococo Revamp — Becoming a Community Parachain Testbed

Throughout its history, Rococo has been primarily focused on internal testing of parachain consensus functionality. With sporadic and unpredictable restarts, it lacked the long-term sustainability support needed to build extensive Cross-Consensus Message (XCM) format functionalities between projects.

Now the time has come to change the narrative of Rococo, allowing the network to become the enabler for the Polkadot developer community. Over the next few weeks, Parity Technologies and our fantastic community of builders will roll out different features to Rococo in phases to transition it to a completely community-maintained parachain testbed.

This will begin with onboarding the Kusama parachain teams. Parachain teams will have a slot as long as they are connected to a relay chain (Polkadot or Kusama). This will be followed by engaging with bridge builders to onboard the bridges and connect them to long-term slots. At the same time, Parity engineers have already started to develop a parachain onboarding automatization pallet that aims to allow every parachain builder to connect to Rococo on a recurring basis for a restricted time range, targeted for release by early November.

After all these updates and one more restart, it is anticipated that Rococo will be launched with the updated chain spec by the end of November, finally providing a network for the Polkadot ecosystem teams to test their projects and use cases.

Introducing Polkadot & Kusama Gifts: The Easiest Way to Send DOT & KSM to Friends & Family

Polkadot and Kusama Gifts are a new way to send DOT or KSM to anyone, even if they don’t already have an account or wallet.

Onboarding new users is one of the biggest challenges for any blockchain network. For members of the Polkadot community, until now the only way to get friends and family who are new to blockchain onboard with Polkadot has been to teach them how to set up their own wallet or send them to a centralized custodial service.

Now, using Polkadot or Kusama Gifts, community members can send DOT or KSM to friends and family in a trustless, non-custodial way, and they’ll be guided through the process of setting up an account and wallet. Gift recipients don’t need to have any previous experience with blockchain technology.

Polkadot Gifts provide an easy way to:

  • Onboard friends or family who are curious about blockchain but haven’t made the leap yet
  • Share your love of Polkadot and send any amount of DOT or KSM
  • Say ‘thank you’ or send someone tokens when you don’t know their address
  • Get friends and family set up to participate in crowdloans

Substrate

Introducing Substrate Connect: Browser-Based Light Clients for Connecting to Substrate Chains

Substrate Connect, a browser-based light client for Substrate-based chains, has landed as the latest addition to Substrate’s technology stack. This eagerly anticipated component of blockchain infrastructure provides the easiest and fastest way to sync with Substrate-based blockchains in a decentralized way, paving the way for more user-friendly dapps and services and a better experience for dapp developers. Substrate Connect represents a huge step forward in pursuit of the Web3 vision, and will allow users to quickly and seamlessly interact with blockchains in the browsers they use on a daily basis.

Substrate Builders Program Milestone Update: October 2021

Every month Parity announces the latest updates from teams in the Substrate Builders Program, and October 2021’s milestone announcement introduces four teams that have reached their first milestone.

Web3 Foundation

Web3 Foundation Grants — Wave 11 Recipients

Web3 Foundation is celebrating the 11th round of grants accepted. After surpassing the 300 grants milestone back in August, it’s time to wrap things up and conclude yet another round of successful applications. This time around, 23 new agreements have been signed.

Moonbeam

  • Moonbeam and KYVE Collaborate to Bring Permanent Data Availability to Moonbeam and Moonriver: Moonbeam announced an integration with KYVE Network, a decentralized archiving and caching solution that enables modern blockchains and dApps to store and serve data reliably. Moonbeam’s integration with KYVE on the Moonbase Alpha network is now completed and Moonriver’s deployment is next. This integration will allow Moonbeam’s fast-growing community of developers to easily store their data permanently on Arweave, enabling higher scalability.
  • Composable Integrates Moonriver into the Mosaic PoC Bridge. Adding MoonriverNW to Mosaic by Composable Finance will allow users to be able to transfer assets between any project deployed on these aforementioned platforms. Details.
  • What Can I Do With My MOVR?: Now that Moonriver has officially launched and crowdloan contributors have received MOVR tokens for their support, users can engage with the network in exciting new ways. Those with MOVR tokens are in a powerful position since they have early access to the network and the projects building on top of it. MOVR tokens are now transferable between addresses, so it is important for holders to get set up to take advantage of full functionality. Some activities they can take part in immediately include token transfers, nominating collators, receiving staking rewards, and voting on referenda. While the multitude of possible activities can seem both thrilling and a bit daunting, these impactful tasks can each be done in a few simple steps.
