This past weekend, our daughter slept over her auntie’s while mommy and daddy had a much-needed “night on the town.” It was the first time she’d done an overnight with family in a while and it reminded me: firstly, how emotional I got her first-ever sleepover, at my sister’s house (cue: my uncontrollable man-sobs in the car as I drove away), but also how far she’s come from our days living on the living room rug. Needing us to hold her, play with her, and generally be within a few feet of her all day.

Now she’s perfectly content off playing with her cousins or her friends or even just off in her bedroom or playroom. She can pick out her own clothes and get dressed all by herself. She is in and out of the bathroom as she needs, even during the night. She knows how to put her dishes in the sink, things into the recycle, laundry in her basket and countless other tasks. Whether she wants to, though, is a different story.
