Thankfulness is a fruit of great cultivation, you rarely find it among gross people. Ungratefulness on the other hand is a form of arrogance that leads to transgression. We’re all blessed in many ways but little thanks do we give. Our beloved Messenger Muhammad ﷺ was a man of gratitude and would even emphasize thus:

“Whoever does not thank people has not thanked Allah.” — Sunan Abī Dāwūd

So today’s daily revival revolves around the sunnah of showing gratitude when blessed and falling to prostration. Abu Hurayrah narrates that:

Whenever the Prophet ﷺ would encounter happy moment or would be given good news, he would fall to his face in prostration expressing gratitude to Allah. — Sunan Abī Dāwūd

Imam ibn al-Qayyim enumerates the pillars of gratitude to Allah viz:

  • Submission of the believer to Allah
  • Love of Allah
  • Acknowledgment of His favors
  • Praising Him for these favors
  • Refraining from utilizing the favors in a way displeasing to Allah

This practice of falling into prostration was well-known by the companions whenever they received good news or evil being warded off. It’s a gesture of appreciation that humbles one’s self with the forehead on the ground, praising and thanking Allah for the success achieved. This sunnah doesn’t require the conditions of salat like having wudoo, facing the qiblah, and so on.

Action Points

  1. Whenever you hear good news, prostrate in thanks to Allah.
  2. Do not be an ungrateful person
  3. Practice this sunnah often, teach it to others, and encourage them to do as well.

That’s it for today, take action on this Daily Revival and if you missed yesterday’s episode, you can find it here. I ask Allah to make it easy for you and me. Amin!
