Do you love spending time on dating apps? Do you feel the need to swipe, swipe, swipe all day long in the hunt for the perfect match?

According to a study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, you may be getting a lot of matches by spending all of your waking hours on dating apps, but chances are, other areas of your life are suffering for it.

“It’s not just that they’re using their phone a lot,” said lead study author Kathryn Coduto. “We had participants who said they were missing school or work, or getting in trouble in classes or at work because they kept checking the dating apps on their phones.”

Why did people let things go that far? According to Coduto’s research, it all boiled down to compulsion.

During her research, Coduto surveyed 269 undergraduate students who used dating apps and asked a series of questions designed to measure their level of social anxiety and loneliness. Researchers found that there was a relationship between compulsive use — which was measured by the level of agreement with statements…
