There’s no doubt that the type of home you have can leave an impression on other people, but what you may not know is that love interests pay close attention to the outdoor space around your home.

In fact, according to a survey conducted by STIHL Inc. of 2,000 daters who own or rent a home, 73 percent say their attraction to someone can be tied to the appearance of their home and 86 percent believe that taking good care of outdoor space is indicative of being an overall caring person. In particular, they notice a home’s yard (67 percent), hedges (65 percent), and walkways and driveways (64 percent).

With this in mind, you may want to suggest a home improvement project as a first date activity. Although it may not sound romantic, 87 percent of survey respondents would work on a home improvement project during a first date and judge the relationship potential based on how successful it is (64 percent).

And what activities are best to spark romance with a partner? Respondents say they like to:

  • Plant a garden (68 percent)
  • Create an outdoor seating area (52 percent)
  • Do landscaping (49 percent)
