Seniors Turn to Online Forums to Talk Sex

Older people are talking about sex more than you think

There are two pervasive views about older people that need to be dispelled: They have no interest in sex and they are not adept with technology enough to use the Internet. Of course, both of those beliefs are far from the truth, and a study in the Journal of Leisure Research reveals how technology and sex tend to intersect for older people.

In fact, when researchers Liza Berdychevsky and Galit Nimrod reviewed the posts on 14 online communities made up of people 50 and older — who were located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada — they found that although sexual topics weren’t the most prevalent subjects on these boards, they did make up the most popular threads, garnering thousands of views.

As with people in other age groups using online forums, the topics of these sexual posts varied. Users in the communities studied talked about everything from their current sexual partners to sex toys to sexual taboos to pornography. Additionally, users enjoyed talking about societal stereotypes regarding older people and sex.

While many of the conversations tended to be lighthearted and filled with jokes and sexual innuendo, older people also turned to these communities to talk about more…
