I was in Prague last weekend and while reading up on activities on Tripadvisor, I came across a section about escape rooms. Whoo, had to book it — it’s so addicting! Barely 5 minutes out, and you’re asking to be locked up again. Recently picked up a rumor about a virtual reality escape room being build, I’ll keep you posted…
Since we started with Virtual Reality month this week, let’s start by explaining the difference between virtual reality, augmented reality and 360 video first.

Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is a simulated reality, which is perceived as actual reality because the senses are being manipulated. People can see, feel and hear as if they were in that fake reality. By using VR glasses people cannot perceive the actual world any more and are completely submerged in the virtual world. Ideal for immersive games and experiences. To give you an idea how people experience VR to be reality, watch these elderly react to adult movies in VR.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality technology connects reality and the virtual world. ‘augmented’ actually means an enhanced or enriched reality and that makes sense because AR technology adds a layer of digital content to reality. Augmented reality lets you fully interact with both worlds.Remember the Pokémon Go hype in which you could see Pokémon in the real world via your smartphone? Or take for example this RideOn ski goggles which enhances your winter sports experience. It combines a GPS system, sensors and camera to project graphics and information on a see-through display.

360 videos

A 360 video is made with a camera system that registers all 360 degrees of a scene. While watching a 360 video you can move and rotate the view, so you can see the full picture as if you were there. You’ve probably come across these videos on Facebook and YouTube already. They can be watched in 2D from a computer, but also in 3D with the use of a head-mounted display such as Samsung Gear or Google Cardboard which makes it more immersive. But unlike virtual reality, you cannot move around in or interact with this space. See it as being a driver (VR) or sitting in the passenger’s seat (360 video).

This registration of Lion King’s The Circle of Life was my first 360 video. I loved the footage of this amazing musical, and that was even before I by accident found out it could be moved…

TIS Picks | VIRTUAL REALITY
5 top Virtual Reality videos

We made this TIS Picks some time ago, but it’s still nice to watch as it highlights 5 clear examples to show you what is possible with/in virtual reality.

Add your own videos and maybe they will feature in the next TIS Weekly. Questions? Remarks? Ideas? hello@tis.tv is the address! From TIS with love, Simone de Bruin.
