I was reading up on the issues augmented reality technology runs into and came across some interesting facts. Did you know the Google Glasses are forbidden in casinos because of privacy reasons and cheating? Or that Google itself decided against adding facial recognition, but others made an app for getting real-time information about the person next to you in the bus? Crazy. Interesting. Terrifying? Maybe. In this newsletter some (other) cool things that can be done with AR.

Virtual sidekicks

Become a mechanic overnight with augmented reality technology. In this demo video shown at Modern Service Experience 2017, you see how a mechanic can use mobile devices to repair a broken slot machine. The same idea is behind this Sidekick project by NASA, which illustrates how an astronaut receives (repair) instructions from Earth which are then displayed on his Microsoft HoloLens.

Mixed Reality Catwalk

Earlier this year during the NYC Fashion Week, creative technology studio Superbright and marketing company xAd created a catwalk show that included elements in augmented reality. Attendants could get additional effects and information, while watching the show through their mobile device.

Create smart surfaces everywhere

This lamp is truly something special! Lampix turns any flat surface into a smart surface using machine learning and computer vision. They believe they can free human-computer interactions from digital screens, by letting you interact with the lamp directly, with your bare hand. The best thing? It comes with an open API, so everybody can start writing applications for it!

Safe cities

The Safe City initiative enables communities to take action against sexual assault and abuse. Their platform is a place where victims of sexual harassment share their story and because of the thousands of reports, they’re able to show unsafe public places on a map of India.

Thanks for adding, Loe Schout!
