Game freak: a person or individual that is obsessed with playing CARD, BOARD, VIDEO or COMPUTER games. Such an individual is MOST often incompetent at other tasks besides playing games.

Mmm, that latter part doesn’t really apply to me (or so I hope), but I do identify with the first part. Time for a newsletter on GAMES! And my question for you: is the VR/AR version better than the original?!

It’s me, Mario!

HoloLens developer Abhishek Singh has devoted his free time to turn Super Mario Bros. into an augmented reality experience. Check out this clip in which he plays the game in Central Park (NYC). Oh, please — do Mario Kart next!!

Yu-Gi-Woh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a trading card game based on a Japanese comic. It’s similar to Magic the Gathering and Pokémon. A fan known as Microwave Sam has shared this video of him testing an AR version of the game in Dolores Park (CA). The game works with voice commands and touch gestures and you can even install your own unique deck into the game.

MMORPGs

Years ago, long before World of Warcraft, there was RuneScape. To date, one of the world’s largest free-to-play MMORPGs. Oh, I played for hours during my teens. OrbusVR reminds me of RuneScape and presents the players with many quests and different ways to interact with other players. All in virtual reality! In terms of social games, but on a local scale, it’s worth mentioning Father.IO, which is a real life first person shooter AR game that can be played with your mobile phone.

Sports in VR

And last, but not least: sports! After all, there’s a thin line between sports / games / eSports if I may say so. Interesting thought: it is expected that in the near future, some VR games will require real life fitness…! For now, I recommend you to check out these three videos:

  • Ski Jump VR — experience something you’ll probably never have done before: the ski jump
  • Project Arena — similar to the game of Pong or squash, excellent reaction speed required (fitness helps)
  • Wear the Rose — experience a rugby training with the England rugby team

Add your own videos and maybe they will feature in the next TIS Weekly. Questions? Remarks? Ideas? hello@tis.tv is the address! From TIS with love, Simone de Bruin.
