Hi, most awesome fans of TIS! It’s been an amazing 1,5 years working for The Innovation Station, but this is probably my last TIS Weekly.. :(! It’s been a true pleasure compiling this weekly update on all things tech and innovation and now I’ll end with a topic close to my heart: sports. Since we’re in the Internet of Things month, let’s see how wearable technology helps a whole range of athletes perform better or even change the way the game is played.

Sorry, I got a little carried away when selecting videos, but if you scroll all the way down you will also find our Storify from the Singularity University NL Summit and TIS Picks: IoT.

Gym workouts

The Beast sensor is an accelerometer with a magnet combined with fitness software. You attach the sensor to your wrist, shirt or weights to measure the velocity, (explosive) force, reps and total training volume. Via the app, it can also provide feedback and suggestions on your training session.

Basketball

The SOLIDshot smart sleeve consists of three bundles of sensors, each containing an ARM processor, gyroscope, accelerometer and LED lights. Measuring arm, elbow and wrist movements, this sleeve captures every shot and then uses the LEDs and speaker (app) to provide you with feedback on how to improve your shot.

Smart sports bra

OMbra by the Canadian OMsignal is a smart sports bra that can give biometric feedback. It’s equipped with sensors tracking not only distance, cadence and pace of your run, but also your breathing pattern and heart rate. OMbra metrics are synced with the companion phone app and the biometric coach gives instant visual and audio feedback.

Boxing

The Corner wearable is ideal for tracking a boxer’s performance, providing real-time performance analysis. It consists of two small sensors that go into a boxer’s hand-wraps. Every punch is tracked and your performance shows up in the app. This provide elite-tracking for the amateur boxer.

Baseball

Strike is a smart baseball which detects and displays the speed, spin rate, rotation, and pitching trajectory of each throw of the ball on your mobile device. The app will even turn the received data into a 3D viewing simulation.

Fishing

The ANGLR tracker is the first rod-mounted trip tracking technology. It’s a device for tracking and recording your fishing activity while you enjoy your day. The tracker is universally designed to fit any rod and with the help of smart sensors it records fishing data, such as number of casts, number of hookups and number of landed fish.

Tennis

The Babolat Play is the world’s first connected tennis racket and has very accurate sensors in the handle that record information about a player’s game. Think of recording your play time, back hands, smashes and volleys, power, topspin, longest rally and serve speed! The information recorded can later be transferred to a mobile device.

Swimming

This has to be one of my favorite videos on our website. The Blind Cap is a Bluetooth-connected Samsung swim cap aimed at swimmers who are blind. Just go and watch the video, it gives me chills — the good kind! — every time :).
