WHAT LIGHT DO YOU USE FOR YOUR MEETINGS?
Torchlight, Tubelight, or……
Harish Kumar (Outdeboxlife), a professional speaker, recently conducted a session on virtual presentability that I hosted. It is so important to get the basics right in today’s virtual world. Harish started with sound, lights, camera, and action. When it came to the section on lights, he put forth a question to the audience:
What light do you use for your online meetings?
One answer said CANDLELIGHT!
How’s that for attention grab?
A candlelight for a Zoom meeting….?
Upon further questioning, the participant said that her area is prone to power cuts, so she uses whatever light is around her.
Harish’s solution for her…. Use a torchlight covered in butter paper.
A tricky answer handled deftly.
Curveballs hit us with regularity. How we deal with it matters, as in this example.
The question was straightforward.
The answer was not standard and one that evinced immediate interest and further probing.
She did not do this to gain attention but knew her answer would bring a smile and, of course, engagement. It also brought about a solution.

In a business setting:
What are the common questions being asked by your clients, prospects, and users?
You go for a sales pitch, prepared with a script and one set of questions you think they are likely to ask.
The pitch seems to be going well, and boom comes a question.
You weren’t ready for it, and you don’t have an answer. Then, there comes the dreaded pregnant pause. Your prospects are looking at you. You are looking at them. Everyone’s waiting.
How do you intend to respond to it? And provide a solution?
You have taken a colleague along. One that has been primed for such a situation. She jumps in, provides an answer, and ends it with a question — throwing the gauntlet back at the prospects in a pleasant, professional way.
You are surprised by the clarity of the response, knowing full well this question or scenario was not anticipated, prepared for. This is like a defender running solo and scoring a goal.
In the middle of such a situation, either you have the wits to respond or have the right teammate who can handle the situation.
Candlelight. Tube light. Or Torchlight. When it’s got to glow, it’s got to burn!
“Slap in the middle of absolute insanity, people pull out the most extraordinary resources. Ingenuity, courage, self-sacrifice.”
A dialogue in The Guns of Navarone
