Wanted: Articles About News Media and News in Fiction
The Ugly Monster wants reviews, analyses, and critiques of journalism and journalistic fiction
It was always the intention of The Ugly Monster to cover all kinds of media. That includes the news media. While we’ve made strides in covering film, TV, games, and comics, we’ve yet to regularly cover broadcast, cable, print, and online news. We rarely even cover entertainment news because we don’t care much about hype or celebrities.
The Ugly Monster is currently looking for contributors to write about the news as media. Face the Nation and Rick and Morty are both TV shows, and they can both be judged as either a benefit or a hazard to the public.
We’re looking to fill two buckets:
Entertainment Media About the News
Was The Newsroom as naive about journalism as The West Wing was about politics? How accurately do All the President’s Men and Spotlight depict the journalistic process? Are Clark Kent and Spider Jerusalem ethical reporters?
Journalism in fiction is an excellent starting point for exploring the news. As we have critiqued the military through A Few Good Men and artificial intelligence through Black Mirror, we can critique the news through fiction.
Reviews, Analyses, and Critiques of the News
How are CNN, the New York Times, and The Economist covering the genocide in Gaza differently? Is The Atlantic really “the left”? Is News Nation really the sensible middle? When does news become propaganda? Can media companies known for entertainment be trusted with news that isn’t “sexy”?
We’re looking to cover the “meta” of the news. This could take the form of reviewing The Trump Tapes with the same personal angle used to review Shade: The Changing Man, or discussing the work of Rachel Maddow the same way we discuss the work of Terrence Malick.
