“We need to lose some weight,” you say, straining at the oars. “Angelika, throw that toolkit over.”

“You could lose your shield, too!” she calls. But she does as you say, and tosses some rations, too.

“Keep the tent,” you warn.

“Mmm.”

She throws the tent-pegs over the edge, then lobs in some pitons.

“What’s in that jar?”

“Red bees!” she exclaims. “Worth five gold at the pawnshop.”

“Throw them at the fish-folk.” You chuckle darkly.

“We might need...”

“Let them fly.”

“Nope.” Instead, she taps your shield.

You sigh, then drop the magnificent shield into the depths.

Continue.

Thanks for reading! This drabble responded to one of Grim Flandango’s daily word prompts (‘pawnshop’)…

…and to Mad as a March Writing Prompt, idea 4: “Write a story where the value of something is in doubt. Perhaps something is suspected of being a fake. Or perhaps it’s not an object, but an action or gesture that is disputed, or even a cultural tradition.”
