Wireframes are a blueprint of your product which is heavily influenced by your prior work and past artifacts, things like user stories, user flows, or sitemaps are your artifacts.

A wireframe is a low-fidelity layout that serves three simple purposes, which include:

  • Presenting the information displayed on the page in a little more detail than our sketches and user flow.
  • Presenting an outline of the structure and layout of the page, and it conveys the overall direction and description of your user interface.
  • Describing the details clearly and specifically while giving everyone involved a good product overview.

Why do we use wireframes?

  • Wireframes help you to test your concepts and structure thereby understanding how users will navigate your product.
  • We use them to learn because they are fast, cheap, and impermanent. They are meant to change as you gather more information through research and feedback from your users and clients.
  • They serve as a common language for your team as well because they are complex enough to inform but simple enough to not get bogged down by too many details.

Wireframes are useful for these reasons:

  • Clarity and common understanding amongst the team.
  • User testing, which uncovers pain points and opportunities.
  • Feedback from clients and stakeholders, they are used to get feedback on things like interactions, flows, layout, and hierarchy.

Creating wireframes

  • Keep it simple.
  • Pencils and paper are a good way to start.
  • You can polish them up if you have a client you want to review with.
  • Ask yourself important questions like what are the user and business goals when interacting with this page, how can content be organized to support this goal, what will the user see first when they come to this page, etc.
  • Consult your user flow and sitemaps.
  • Tackle risky features first.
  • Bring your team into the process.
