DISCLAIMER: This tutorial series is for educational purposes only. Any advice will be welcomed. I hope this will help you maintain your anonymity. I have used Windows 10 operating system for this tutorial, as it is most people’s primary operating system, but if you really care about your privacy it should not be used as your primary operating system. Use linux instead, and when possible, open source software. You don’t have to strictly follow the things I’m going to do. This is just to give you an idea so you can follow it or change what suits you best.

In this episode we are going to install Linux Kodachi: an operating system based on Ubuntu. It will provide you with a secure, anti-forensic, and anonymous OS considering all features that a person who is concerned about privacy would need to have in order to be secure. All connections to the Internet are forced to go through the VPN then Tor network with DNS encryption.

I recommend that you watch the video tutorial while reading this article to make it easier to follow the whole process.

Rather than just hidding your IP, there are other things to protect your anonymity. For example your fingerprint: mix of data you give when surfing internet such as the OS, your screen resolution, web browser… etc. That’s why in today’s episode we are going to install a Virtual machine manager(VMware) to be able to install a privacy focused Linux distribution in an easy way.

I recommend you to use this Virtual Machine just for your anonymous activities, like the ZEOS Fractal. So you keep on with your transparent life in your main OS and your anonymous life in the Kodachi VM.

Another important thing to keep in mind is the metadata of the files you share online. Kodachi comes with a tool called ExifCleaner already installed, with which you can delete the metadata by just dragging the file on the app. You should use it before sharing pictures or another kind of files online. I may make a tutorial about this.

If you want to know everything about KodachiI recommend you to watch the 2 hours explained review made by it’s developer, Warith AL Maawali.

I have simplified the tutorial as much as possible to make it easy and quick to follow. Let’s get started:

1) Downloading VMware & Linux Kodachi

Download VMware Workstation Player v15.5.7

Download Linux Kodachi.

Check that Lokinet is running and working.

Go to whatismyipaddress.com and verify that is not your ISP IP.

what is my ip search screenshot

2) Installing VMware

Run the VMware installer that you have downloaded.

Follow the installation process.

Uncheck these 2 options.

VMware Installation User Experience Settings

Finish the installation.

Open VMware Workstation.

Select the free option

VMware Free Option

Click on Create a New Virtual Machine.

ISO image selection in VMware

Select the image file option and browse the Kodachi ISO that you have downloaded before.

Kodachi ISO file selection

Click on “Linux”, Ubuntu. Next.

Name your virtual machine.

Disk settings in VMware

Specify disk capacity. 30GB is recommended for Kodachi.

Check “Store virtual disk as a single file”. (Optional)

VMware hardware customization

Now customize the VM hardware depending on your pc.

The minimum requeriments for Kodachi are 2 CPU cores and 2GB of ram. Always leave enough for your pc.

Click on Finish.

3) Installing Linux Kodachi in VMware

Click on “Play virtual machine” and wait until it boots.

VMware tools installation popup

When a window pop ups click on Click on download and install the VMware tools.

Wait a bit until the OS loads.

Shortcut to Kodachi Offline installation

Click on the desktop shortcut to Install Kodachi Offline.

Follow the installation process.

Kodachi language selection

I recommend selecting US english. Same as the VPN.

Disk encryption in Kodachi

Check these 2 options for disk encryption.

Choose an encryption passphrase. You will need it to open the OS everytime.

Leave the default location.

User data in Kodachi

Here I don’t change the username neither choose password.(Optional) For doing that click back and foward to skip the step.

Installing Kodachi

Wait until the installation finishes :)

Kodachi installation completed pop-up window

Click on Restart Now

Kodachi Boot menu

Press enter to boot “Ubuntu” (Kodachi)

Enter your encryption passphrase

Wait until it loads.

Completing Kodachi installation terminal

Now it will shutdown again to finish the installation.

Kodachi Boot menu

Open VMware and launch the Kodachi VM.

Kodachi Security apps

Kodachi comes with many apps installed. For example:

-KeepassXC: storing your passwords)

-ExifCleaner: deleting the metadata of your files.

  • Session: anonymous messenger
Updating Kodachi repositories

Now we are going to update everything. For that, open the terminal pressing: Windows Key + T

Write “sudo apt update” and press enter.

Updating Kodachi

Now write “sudo apt upgrade” and press enter.

When it asks you if you want to continue, write “y” and press enter

Kodachi Dashboard

It will take a while because the internet speed isn’t very fast with Lokinet in the Windows version… While it updates you can check the awesome Kodachi Dashboard :D

End of Kodachi installation process

Finally, you have Linux Kodachi installed in a VM!

Note: You always need to wait few minutes (around 5) while the OS loads and it connects to Kodachi VPN. Doing so while you have lokinet running in Windows Kodachi sees your ISP IP as the lokinet one. Very anonymous :)

I hope you liked this tutorial and see you in the next one!
