The Debriefing is a series of blogisodes wherein I, Anton Beza, discuss what I’ve learned, loved and not-loved-so-much after the completion of a user-created mission from the app Checkverse. To go on your own adventures download Checkverse for Android or iPhone today!

Sunday I watched the Super Bowl. I wasn’t planning to, I didn’t last year, in fact, I don’t really remember watching a Super Bowl after 2008’s Giants vs. Patriots. And I only got into that one because NY was the underdog against Massachusetts and it was the culmination of a rivalry that I became aware of when I started college in 2004, the year when the Boston Red Sox defeated the Yankees on their way to the World Series. I didn’t watch those games, but I heard all about them around campus. In my eyes, the 2008 Super Bowl was a rematch and a great way to finish off college with a win for NY.

After that though, I never really watched the game. I think the storyline going into the 2008 Super Bowl was what really grabbed me. There hasn’t been much of a compelling story since. At least not enough of one to get an outsider like me to tune in.

But when there’s a mission on the line, I’m there! This week’s mission was created by mission author extraordinaire, alison5800. The mission: “Experience Super Bowl Sunday”.

Here’s the proof:

I even bought Broncos gear.

So I watched the Super Bowl, at least most of it. Here are the highlights:

  • For a casual observer like me, the commercials are usually why I’m watching. This year’s commercials were so-so. I remember the “puppy monkey baby” commercial the best, but I don’t remember what it was advertising. In fact, I think that’s a major flaw with today’s ads. They’re all about shocking you into paying attention and you forget, or don’t pick up on, what they’re advertising. This is not a good trend.
  • For snacks this year we made guacamole! It was good, but I think I put in too much lime juice despite the warnings and gasps against it. Usually we make loaded nachos for parties. I should have stuck with that, you can’t screw it up.
  • Our friend Kris came over for a small viewing party. We decided to come up with our own bets to achieve our gambling goal: Kris had us guessing how many times Peyton Manning would say “Omaha”, Alyssa had us predict how long it would be till the first person “falls”, and I had us forecast how long till the first touch down. We each each bet 50¢. I won the “fall time” bet, Alyssa won for “Omaha” and Kris won for “time to first TD”. So in the end, we all won and earned nothing. It was like we never bet at all.
  • I thought the Mars/Beyoncé part of the half-time show was good. They did a good job of topping the bland filler of Coldplay. I like that Bruno Mars, he seems like he really enjoys what he’s doing and gives it his all. I might not listen to his music, but I find him entertaining.
  • What was with that ref? It seemed like he was on a power trip or something. He kept upholding the weirdest calls. The camera clearly showed otherwise.

After the half-time show, we lost interest. Kris had to head back home to get some sleep before work and I didn’t have much motivation to continue watching. Also, it seemed pretty clear that the Broncos were going to win. There were lots of strikes against it maintaining my interest. Maybe there were better commercials in the latter half, but if so, I haven’t heard about them.

Maybe there will be another undefeated season to get me through the whole thing next year.

One Last Thing!

Last time on The Debriefing, I put out a call for more missions and you know what? I got some! You’ll definitely be seeing some of them pop up in upcoming blogisodes. Keep ’em coming!

That’s it. Till next time,

Your pal,
Anton
