Snowfall Totals for the 2022–23 Season in the Eastern U.S.
Most of the East had below-normal or near-normal snowfall totals this season through Christmas — except for extremely snowy Buffalo, New York, the National Weather Service says.
Buffalo’s 92.7-inch total is its highest for a winter season through Dec. 25, the weather service office in the city says. It’s only 2.7 inches shy of the typical total for an entire season.
At least 28 people died as a result of an “epic blizzard” that began on Christmas Eve, according to the Associated Press. Almost 50 inches of snow fell over three days, the weather service says.
Meanwhile, the East is about to warm up significantly. And in much of New England outside the White and southern Green Mountains, “modeled snow depth” is below normal for late December, the weather service office in Burlington, Vermont, tweeted.
Not Much Snow in New England So Far This Season
“A widespread area of above normal temperatures in the central U.S. will be expanding eastward through the latter part of the week and continuing into early next week,” a Weather Prediction Center discussion says. “Daily records for warm lows may be widespread as the warmest air reaches the East, while a few isolated daily record highs cannot be ruled out.”
Early January may also be warmer than normal in the Northeast, according to NOAA Climate Prediction Center outlooks. It may also be wetter than normal.
Today’s weather at the summit of Mount Washington in New Hampshire was frigid, however. The temperature was slightly below zero — with a wind chill of 32 below — at 3:43 p.m. (ET) today, according to the Mount Washington Observatory.
During the recent winter storm, winds peaked at 151 mph at the 6,288-foot mountain, according to preliminary Weather Prediction Center data. Alexis George, Mount Washington Observatory weather observer and meteorologist, reported that sustained winds exceeded 100 mph on Dec. 23 and gusts peaked at 150 mph.
Wow!
