He said he had begun his career as a painter, taking classes at the Art Students League in NYC. He felt that painting was too limiting for him. He loved art itself, the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, singing, poetry, dance, choreography, and visual forms such as painting or sculpture. He loved them all. He appreciated all of the arts for their beauty and emotional power. His passion was really to serve the arts and artists in ways beyond what he might personally create with brush and palette.
Still, he saw early on that the connection between commerce and “good art” was tenuous at best. Yes, there were many genres of art, and yes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but he felt strongly that today art is often little more than an interaction between clueless, tasteless, intellectual brutes.
