Bonjour!

How have you been?

Must be riding awesome with your car? So good!

But do you see the changing weather? From spring, to summer and now to rainy. Not sure, where you reside but in most parts of India, the monsoon is bringing hurricane.

As a part of the car awareness series, I thought this would be good to make you aware of the practices that you must inculcate for your car if you face a hurricane.

I always believe that prevention is better than the cure.

And, in order to prevent unforeseen situations in a typical hurricane, you must follow these habits.

I’m listing down such 9 important precautions that you must consider.

Here you go…

1. Organize Your Car Docs Better

As a responsible car owner, you must be carrying your car documents while you drive. But you must add a little more extra care for this. Organize your car docs in a better way. Keep your docs laminated and store in a plastic bag. Make additional copies of the documents and keep them distributed.

3. Click Pictures

This one is a very uncommon recommendation but you must keep clicking pictures of your car’s interior and exterior periodically (1 month interval). This is to ensure that your get maximum returns on your insurance in case if your car gets damaged in a hurricane.

4. Fill The Car Tank

The car’s tank need to be uptight while you step out during the rain. This ignorance might cost you heavy. A full tank car will help you in getting the required help at unforeseen situation. Without the fuel, you may not even drag your car to the next door for the help.

5. Keep Your Windshield Wiper Uptight

During the hurricane, the wipers are most likely to get destroyed easily. Make sure that the wipers are strong enough to resist and wipe off a large amount of water. If there is even a slight signal of wiper failure, consider replacing with a a new one.

6. Keep An Emergency Kit

This emergency kit need to be kept at a reachable place inside the car. Don’t lock it completely that will hinder your accessibility. The kit must contain a pocket knife, extra fuse, electrical and duct tape, automotive toolkit, road flares, tire jack, flashlight, extra battery, and a first aid kid. There are the minimal must-haves for your emergency kit.

7. Keep A Travel Bag

This travel bag should have the minimal required things for you to survive in case of a hurricane (obviously without your car). Carry a pair of dress, a water bottle, a blanket, extra shoes and socks, extra pair of glass, portable phone charger, cash, and photocopies of important identity documents.

8. Park Your Car Safely

It’s very easy to get stuck in chaos but even if you are stuck your focus should be to park your car at a safe place. Safe here means you shouldn;t park your car near a high building, or a tree, or an electric fencing, or stop lights. Look out for finding an open ground and park it there.

9. Deflate Your Tires

You may question this one but it is advisable that you deflate your tires. Deflating the tires will reduce the risk of car being carried away by the flood. It is very likely that in case of hurricane and flood, the car may get carried away if it is inflated. Also, do keep a pump to re-inflate your tires when required.
