Planting Trees at Scale with DeFi NFTs

As the crypto space begins to grow in our understanding that NFTs and DeFi as having significantly greater potential than simple jpegs, gifs, and profile pictures, many projects and communities are centering their conversations on the topic of ReFi — regenerative finance. How can these tools be used to create new models within the realm of sustainability and regenerative practices? As my good friend Samuel Del Real of Doin Gud likes to ask, “what would a military-industrial-complex for positive impact look like?”

Our protocol is very interested in contributing answers to questions like these that address novel utility for NFTs and Grandmother Grove, the flagship project out of our Ecology Guild, is one proof-of-concept that we hope points to some of these newer models.

What is Grandmother Grove, and how does it work?

Started in early 2021 by Ryan Ferris and Matt Waters of Unchained Music, James McCall of LexDAO, and myself, Grandmother Grove uses DeFi and NFTs to turn charitable donations into both immediate impact as well as an engine for long-term impact in the world of reforestation. To date, we’ve planted approximately 13k trees worldwide, with more being planted all the time.

The mechanism is fairly straightforward. When someone makes a donation, that contribution is split into two piles — one portion for immediate impact, and one for a leveraged impact that continues to drip over time. The immediate impact portion goes straight into planting trees in ten countries around the world through our partnership with The Eden Projects. The second half is deposited inside a Charged Particles NFT, controlled by Grove DAO, which starts earning interest immediately through Aave. This interest, as a programmable royalty, continues to plant trees in perpetuity, with the full amount of the donation always accessible. Down the road, as the project reaches its twilight, 100% of these leveraged donations will be donated.

In short, this allows us to utilize the borrowing-lending mechanisms of Aave to leverage even more charitable good from the collected donations over time.

So How Can I Contribute?

Donations can be made in a number of ways which you can find outlined on the project’s website, but the most interesting way at the time of writing is through Giveth. This platform allows you to contribute to thousands of incredible projects and earn portions of your donation back in their native GIV token. You can donate directly HERE.

We would also encourage you to join in the Charged Particles Ecology Guild on our Discord server where there a regular conversation about this project and others being built on and around the Charged Particles community (check out our recent event “Return To Green” hosted by @ReFiNFT).

We also have ongoing initiatives that overlap with our Charity Guild utilizing NFT art auctions to raise funds for mental health awareness. Learn more here.

About Charged Particles

Charged Particles is a protocol that allows users to deposit ERC-20, ERC-721, and ERC-1155 tokens into NFTs. A scarce NFT (e.g. Art, Collectible, Virtual Real Estate, In-Game Item, etc.) can now be transformed into a basket holding a number of other tokens. The Principal amount can be time-locked inside the NFT, and through integration with Aave’s aTokens, the programmable yield from these DeFi yield-generating assets is just a few clicks away.
