Since the launch of our first iOS app we’ve partnered with 24 Hour Fitness, released an Android app, signed several NBA, NFL, and NCAA athletes to the Lucid Player’s Association, helped Adidas launch a new clothing line called “Focus”, been featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter, and many other accomplishments that have validated that we are on to something special.

We’ve learned a lot since the launch last year and have been hard at work on Lucid 2.0. The brand has a fresh coat of paint, the apps are better, and the new content is next-level. New features in the app include…

Game Day
You tell Lucid when your next game is, and we’ll get you locked in starting the night before with a calming sleep meditation. The following morning we’ll wake you up and continue getting you ready to perform, right up until game time.

Chat With Your Coach
As Lucid trains your mind to help you break through your limits and perform at your best, you’ll now have access to chat with a Lucid certified mental skills coach to get your questions answered and have your mental training personalized.

Train Like The Pros
Several of our LPA (Lucid Player’s Association) athletes have curated their favorite and most impactful Lucid workouts so you can train just like they do. The first batch of Athlete Packs include Aaron Gordon’s Basketball Pack, Katie Brooks’ Lacrosse Pack, Mike Sciore’s Endurance Pack, and more.

In addition to launching the 2.0 apps, we are currently working on in-person Lucid mental training events, long-form video instruction for coaches on the web, and we still have a couple secrets up our sleeve launching soon, so stay tuned!

The Mission

At Lucid, our passion to unlock potential drives who we are and what we do. True competitors are on a never-ending quest for greatness, often putting more pressure on themselves than any coach or peer ever could — which is why we have created Lucid 2.0 to help curb the noise, focus, and achieve results.

Unlike other meditation or performance apps, Lucid is goal-oriented and founded in principles of sport psychology. We help you perform under pressure by providing you with the mental training tools to face any challenges that you choose to tackle.

We live in a world where every moment counts, which is why our workouts are designed to be completed wherever you are, whenever you need them.

All you need is a phone and five minutes.

Get Lucid!

Lucid 2.0 was originally published in Get Lucid on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

The lead it series is going to sound pretty redundant at the start of each article, because leading is about living these principles. You can’t lead your team if you aren’t practicing what you preach. When it comes to laser focus, that means you have to be locked into the present moment, focused on what you can control, and refocus quickly when you realize your mind has wandered away from what’s important now.

You know that the irony of winning is that you can’t control results and outcomes. You can’t control whether you win or lose. Your team can’t either. Focusing on winning and losing is fools gold. Everyone wants to win, your job as the leader is to get your team to focus on doing what it takes to give themselves the best chance to win. Instead of focusing on results, you are focused on executing the game plan. Instead of getting on your team when actions don’t lead to the desired results, you push the to take the right actions no matter what.

When it comes to leading laser focus, you are playing a different game than the one being tracked on the scoreboard. You want to make sure your team is locked into the present moment competing to the best of their ability.

How do you do that? Follow these three steps:

Focus on what is in your control: As a leader, it is your job to direct the team’s focus. You have the power to focus them on things that are out of their control or things that are in their control. The natural tendency is to focus on the things that are out of their control. Results are easier to measure than executing on the process. As the leader, take the time to define for your team what winning and losing looks like in your eyes. This doesn’t mean you don’t use the results and outcomes as a measuring stick of your progress, it means you put everything in the right place. Results are a measuring stick of growth, not a determinant of your team’s value.

Own the Setbacks: As the leader, you are the one in charge of setting the game plan and getting your team prepared. If you encounter challenges and setbacks, be the first one to accept responsibility and set a new course. Do what is in your control to course correct and set a new plan for your team. Let everyone know that things don’t always go as planned and with challenges and setbacks come opportunities for everyone to grow and learn. Analyze the setbacks, make your corrections, and keep moving forward.

So What! Next Play: In the heat of competition, it is easy to lose our focus. It is easy to get caught up in whether we are achieving the desired results or not. As a leader, it is your job to recognize when your members of your team have lost their focus. Simply notice it, bring it to their attention, and tell them to refocus fast and get onto the next play. Maintaining focus under pressure isn’t easy. As a leader, you can get the whole team on board to hold each other accountable starting with you. Losing your focus is ok, refusing to move on once you have been made aware isn’t. A mistake is ok, not moving on after a mistake is not. The difference between making a mistake and not moving on is that you can’t control mistakes. They will happen. You can control the decision to move on once you are aware.

Leading laser focus has two parts. First, you have to live the principles yourself. Living the principles yourself will make it easier for you to lead them. Don’t worry if you aren’t perfect. Mental training doesn’t require perfection, it requires practice. Second, you have to be the guide for your team. When the pressure is on, focus will be challenged. As a leader (and as a team) set the expectations to focus only on the things you can control and stick to it. When you find yourself or others deviating and focusing on results, simply bring them back to what they can control.

If you are able to lead the first two pillars, you are going to put yourself and your team in a great position to have success in any competitive environment.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app. You are a human being who is free to fail because victory goes to those who are willing to get vulnerable. You have heard us say this before. Hopefully, you have had a chance to practice with yourself. You can practice putting yourself out there. You can practice fully committing to the actions you know you need to take. You can practice opening up to the possibility of failure. If you can do this for yourself, and remember that you are still a valuable human being no matter what happens, then you can begin to lead others to unlock their potential by doing the same.

Start with Value: It all starts with valuing those around you as human beings first. Yes we all want to succeed and help others unlock their full potential, but we can only do that if we see people as valuable no matter what happens. If you want to lead others to success and open them up to failure and vulnerability so they can grow, you have to let them know that whether they succeed or fail, you value them the same. Then, you have to back your words up with real actions. If they fail, you have to guide them through that experience while connecting with them as a human being. Reward their vulnerability and openness with support and encouragement. Notice that they are trying and help guide them so they can keep moving in the right direction. Don’t try to do it for them. They will struggle. They will fail. As a coach and leader, you are providing a light on the path that they have to walk.

Support Stumbling: As a leader, you are in charge of the level of risk you expose those you are leading to. You can also support your team through those risky and uncomfortable situations. Therefore you have two jobs. The first one is to make sure you are pushing people outside of their comfort zone and the second one is being there to reassure them and stabilize them and help them recover and get back up when they fall. As a leader, you open up your team to fall because they know you will help them get right back up without losing enthusiasm. Winston Churchill said that success is moving from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm. As a leader, never lose enthusiasm for the journey and your team will follow in your footsteps no matter what happens.

Vulnerability starts with you: As a leader, vulnerability starts with you. If you want your team to get vulnerable and uncomfortable, you have to fight to walk the walk. This is an area that words mean nothing without actions. Show up each moment going all in. Putting yourself on the line. Trusting your team and your skills and getting vulnerable. The only way to lead vulnerability is to live it.

As a leader, this pillar is your greatest opportunity to show your team what it means to be mentally strong. If you can demonstrate the actions above, your team will know that they can take risks and they will be ok. They can get out of their comfort zones knowing you have their back and you can push them even further once you have built that trust.

It is also the place where you can quickly lose your team. Your team knows when what you are doing is about you. They will know when you are avoiding vulnerability or avoiding mistakes. They will know when you see them only as a result or outcome and stop seeing their value as human beings.

Keep living out the principles. Keep showing up. Leading isn’t easy, but we are here to help you along the way. Know that you will make mistakes, you will focus on results and outcomes, you will stop treating your team like human beings, and you will shelter yourself from getting vulnerable. Simply notice when this happens, and move on. Make amends if you need to and keep moving forward. Growth is a continuous cycle of learning, living, and leading.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app. Mental training requires an open mind, getting comfortable with discomfort, and acting your way into the feeling. You know that is what it takes. Knowing isn’t enough, you have to start living these rules on a daily basis. Your growth happens when you begin to apply the rules to your own life. The more reps you can get, the faster you will learn. Finally, if you are living the rules in your own life, you put yourself in a position to lead others. You cannot lead others until you have begun to practice these rules and philosophies in your own life. You don’t just read a book and become an expert. You need to apply and grow through your own practice. If you do that, then you can begin to lead others.

Actions Speak Louder than words: We already covered step one. The best way to lead the rules is to live the rules everyday. To apply the rules to every situation you find yourself in. The people around you should see you genuinely applying the rules and living them in your own life. Actions speak louder than words.

Create the Space: As a leader, the second thing you can do is create the space for others to live the principles. As a leader, you know something that others may not. You are living by principles that are helping you to succeed at a level that others wish to succeed at.

If you want to be a leader, then you need to meet people where they are and create the space for them to grow and learn. Challenge those around you (gently at first) with ideas that are different from their own and ask them to have an open mind.

Create a safe space for them to question assumptions and the status quo. Don’t get offended if they challenge your opinions and ideas. Instead, guide them to think through things themselves. This can be time consuming. The natural tendency is to want to tell people what to do. To pull them down the path. Instead, create the environment in a way that allows them to discover the path themselves.

Creating a safe space also allows them to get uncomfortable and still take action. They know they are going to be ok because you have told them they will be ok. As a leader, they look to you to determine success and failure. They look to you to determine if they are doing well or poorly. You have the power to push them outside of their comfort zone while also providing the safety they need to really go for it.

Call for Action: Finally, as a leader, you have to be about action. If you are living the training, and creating a safe space for those you are leading, you have to lead them into action. Again, actions may come slowly at first, but as they build trust in you as their leader, they will begin to move faster. If you can lead your teams into action with an open mind and the willingness to get uncomfortable, then you are leading the mental game.

The process isn’t always easy. There will be times when you will want to shortcut the process. Don’t do it! Those moments are tests of your own mental strength. Can you overcome your own feelings and allow the circumstances to play out how they need to? Can you trust the process even if the desired results haven’t shown up yet? If you can, the results will come. We aren’t wondering if this works, we have seen it work for ourselves and others that we have worked with.

Keep showing up. Keep putting in the work. You are learning, you are living, and whether you know it or not, you are always leading. Make sure you are leading in a way that helps those around you unlock their full potential.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app.

Living the Mental Training Principles

Learning about mental training is the first step to mental strength. Awareness activates your ability. We covered the four pillars and shared how each of them can help you perform at a high level. Then we challenged you to apply them to your life. To get stronger and be your best when the pressure is on you need to rep out the training. Just like any other skill, mental skills require practice in order to make them automatic in your daily life. You can practice in two ways. The first one is being more aware of when the skills apply in your day to day life. Just noticing when your mind is not in the present moment or when you are focused on something that is out of your control can help you refocus or reframe — that is a mental training rep. The second way to practice is to intentionally set up mental training challenges. Below are a few ways to keep practicing because we know that repetition leads to retention.

Winning Wisdom: As a human being choosing to perform, you are free to fail. You are free to make mistakes. You can work on this skill daily. Think through your day and reflect on areas where you have made mistakes, failed, or had a setback. Review those situations from the lens that you are a human and any mistake, failure, or setback is an opportunity to learn and move forward. Also, you can look at the past and future and search for opportunities to put yourself out there; opportunities to get vulnerable or take action even when you don’t know the outcome. Take action no matter how you feel. You can always analyze and adjust in the future.

Laser Focus: You are always living laser focus whether you are aware of it or not…the question is what are you focused on. To live with laser focus, check in throughout your day to see what you are focusing on. Are you focused on what is in your control? If not, use your check in as an opportunity to refocus. You can also take some time out of your day to work on your focus with a 5–10 minute meditation where you focus on your breath. When you meditate, focus on your breath and be aware of your thoughts. If you notice your mind has wandered away from your breath, simply refocus. Doing exercises like meditation on a regular basis will improve your awareness and focus.

Supreme Confidence: Confidence is an action. The way to build confidence is to take action. No matter what is going on — no matter how you feel, take action. As you take action throughout your day, you will get much further than you think you can. Even if you feel fear or anxiety, you can take action knowing you will be ok. Unless there is a real physical danger involved, you will be ok after taking the action. Taking action takes mental strength. Taking action builds mental strength. Seek out ways to take action today that you wouldn’t take action on.

Competitive Drive: You are the competition. Push your limits each day. Growth happens at the edge of your comfort zone. Every circumstance and situation provides an opportunity to grow. Use your mental strength to go into each situation looking to grow and expand your potential. As you go through your day, simply notice how you are framing challenges, obstacles, and opponents. If you notice you are framing situations as win or lose, then it is time to reframe the situation as win through growth.

If learning leads to awareness, repetition leads to retention. Once you know these skills, it is on you to start practicing them daily. It will be challenging at first. You won’t always be aware. With each rep, slowly but surely you will begin to see a change in how you see the world. You will develop persistence and resilience. With each rep you will build true confidence, focus, and mental strength. Then, with patience and repetitions, you will begin to see the results you were looking for. When the results start coming in, don’t forget about the process that got you there. The process never changes no matter what level you are on, there is another level. Keep training. Keep showing up.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app. The highest level of competitive drive is collaborating with our circumstances and environment to unlock our full potential. It takes mental strength to compete at this level because so often, we are distracted by competing with others.

Competing against others: no matter where you are or what you are doing, there is a strong drive to compare what we are doing and accomplishing with what others are doing and accomplishing. While it is important to learn by assessing our actions based on the results we want to achieve, competing against others and comparing our results to theirs can completely derail our motivation. When you realize you are competing and comparing to others and it is limiting your motivation, remind yourself that your competition is there to motivate you to learn and grow.

Competing against yourself: This is where the magic happens. Each of us has a unique set of talent and experiences to build with. The goal is to make the most out of ourselves and the circumstances we find ourselves in. This goes back to Laser Focus…in every situation, we need to focus and execute on what is in our control to keep moving forward. Compete to analyze the circumstances you are in. Compete to take action. Compete to be open and adjust when the circumstances change. Competing against yourself is competing against becoming rigid and stuck. Compete to let go and flow.

Collaboration: Competing against yourself means shifting your mind from competing against others to collaborating with others to unlock your full potential. You are not trying to beat your opponent, you are working with the challenges and obstacles they provide to help you learn and grow. You aren’t competing against an obstacle or challenge, you are working with that challenge to build the skills you need to keep moving forward. When we shift our focus from winning or losing to growing, we unlock a whole new level of motivation.

Living out the principles of competitive drive aren’t easy. It is strongly reinforced that we are in a win or lose world. It will take effort and training to rise above that mindset to really embrace the true competition: Your personal growth and development. Just like any other skill, you can train yourself to shift your motivation and competitive drive. Start your training today. Look for areas that you are clearly competing and comparing yourself to others and reframe that situation that highlights the competition for your own growth and how you can shift from competing against your opponent to collaborating with them to get the growth and development you need to get to the next level.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app. Supreme confidence is taking the right action no matter how you feel. The right action doesn’t mean a successful action. It means the best action you know to take based on the information you currently have. After you take that action, you might discover that there is a better action to take. The only way you can learn that is by taking the first action and learning from it.

Shaky Confidence: living with shaky confidence means you have an idea of what you should be doing but you don’t take action because you are afraid of being wrong. At some point, you have to take action in order to get the information you need to move forward. If you only take action when it feels good, you will be limiting your growth. If fear and uncertainty are holding you back from taking action, then you have shaky confidence.

Stable Confidence: living with stable confidence requires work. You will have to be aware of when you don’t feel like taking action even though you know you need to do something. You will have to act your way into the feeling. There are two ways you can live with stable confidence. The first is observing opportunities to act in your daily life. Moments when you feel uncomfortable but know you need to act. The second way is to choose an area each day or each week where you will make a plan to take action even though it is uncomfortable. You practice and get reps in consciously so you will have the skills and confidence to act when situations arise unexpectedly.

Supreme Confidence: living with supreme confidence is a process just like any other growth process. When you get outside of your comfort zone and take confident action, it becomes easier the more often you do it. With time, things that made you uncomfortable no longer pop up on the radar and you move on to new challenges and obstacles. You will know when you are living with supreme confidence when you feel discomfort around an action but you don’t even hesitate…you dive right into action.

Living is about actions. Take actions boldly and confidently. No matter what happens, you can learn and move forward. Don’t let fear and uncertainty hold you back from reaching your full potential. Step out, step up, and keep moving forward.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app. The mind is easily distracted and pulled out of the present moment. It is easier to focus on things that are out of our control and wish they were different than to focus on what is in our control and take action.

Being Present: Living in the present moment means we are fully aware of where we are placing our focus at all times. Wherever we are, we are choosing for our mind to be there as well — to be fully engaged and present each moment. We can be pulled from the present by thoughts, feelings, and our surroundings. We can flash back and relive something that happened in the past or we can fast forward and pre-live a dream or nightmare in the future. We can even check out from what we are doing and our mind can wander somewhere else in the present moment. Notice your mind and when you notice it wandering, gently bring it back.

Focus on what you can control: Focus on what you can control. Focus on what you can control. Focus on what you can control! Living this principle will be the difference maker in your performance. If you focus on what you can control you won’t get stuck because you can always change the things that are in your control. The things you can control tend to affect the things that are out of your control. Start taking action on the things you can control and just notice how they affect the things that are out of your control.

Refocus Fast: Whether your mind wanders out of the present moment or you start focusing on things that are out of your control, the biggest skill for building laser focus is your ability to refocus fast. Refocusing fast requires awareness and compassion. You have to be aware when your focus shifts away from what you can control in the present moment. Then you have to be compassionate for yourself. You have to know that losing your focus is going to happen. You can’t change it, but you can change how you respond. You can choose to bring your focus back.

Living with laser focus has two parts. The first part is your real life experiences. There are opportunities each and every moment to work on the 3 skills of laser focus. The second part is a training regiment. You can take time each day to build your ability to focus by training with an MVP or other focus exercise. You can have a coach lead you through the exercise or you can lead yourself. Just like strength training, building your mental muscle will help you perform when the pressure is on and you need to focus to be at your best.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app. At first, you should be checking in daily with the three parts of the Winning Wisdom Pillar. You should be reminding yourself that you are a human being choosing to perform. Therefore, you are free to fail, because you know that Victory truly does go to those that are willing to get Vulnerable. What does that mean on a daily basis?

Human being choosing to perform: Living as a human being choosing to perform means you recognize that you are choosing to be in different situation. Even if you are not choosing to be in a situation, you can remind yourself that you are a human being and your value is not determined by the results or outcomes of your current situation. It means showing up as authentically to yourself as you can. Only you know what you are capable of. Only you know the value you are able to bring the world. Don’t allow yourself to lose sight of who you are.

Free to fail/free to fall: Living free to fail is not about deciding to fail. It is about deciding not to be held back by the fear of failure. It means finding the balance between preparation and action. Not being afraid to bite off more than you can chew knowing that you may not get the results you wanted. If you are open to failing and falling, you are open to growing. Living free to fail means no matter what happens you keep moving forward. You act, analyze, adjust, and act again.

Victory goes to the Vulnerable: Living this motto is where you will start to win big. Getting vulnerable is not putting yourself in physical danger. It is about putting yourself out there. Going all in even when you aren’t sure of the result. Really going all in can feel vulnerable, but what you will soon realize is that you aren’t actually in danger. Most of the time, when it comes to performing at a high level, we are the only ones stopping ourselves because we are afraid. It actually takes a lot of strength to open yourself up and get vulnerable.

It can be a challenge living out the first pillar. It is easy to get distracted and begin to define ourselves based on what we do or based on what others think or say about us. With repetition, you can start operating with the wisdom that you are a human being choosing to perform. You are free to fail, because victory goes to the vulnerable.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app. Living them is a process of repetition, repetition, repetition. Knowing what to do and then doing it is hard. It is much easier to talk about having an open mind, getting uncomfortable, and acting your way into the feeling, but actually doing these things is much harder.

Having an Open Mind: Living with an open mind means you are aware of your thoughts. You are aware of the lens you view new information through. You are able to recognize the judgement you are bringing into new situations. If you are able to recognize whether you are open or closed to a new idea or action, you can get curious and begin to question your underlying assumptions. Living with an open mind requires curiosity and a belief that there is always something to learn.

Comfortable being uncomfortable: Being comfortable in uncomfortable situations is a skill that you can build just like any other skill. It requires training and practice. We are not able to avoid discomfort in our lives so it makes sense to train and prepare by choosing opportunities to get uncomfortable. We are choosing to get uncomfortable so when discomfort is forced upon us by a circumstance or setting that is out of our control, we will know how to handle it. Recognize the situation will be uncomfortable and choose to go towards it instead of avoiding it.

Act your way into the feeling: The best way to live out this rule is to act, act, act. It is impossible to act perfectly in everything we do. In fact, most people overanalyze and never end up taking action. We can all use more action in our life. The way to act your way into the feeling is to know what actions you need to take in the situation you are in right now. That means you are locked into the present, focused on the task at hand. When an action presents itself to be done, simply notice your energy and if you know it is the right action, take it. Act, analyze, adjust, and act again. Learning takes place best through action.

As you go through your day and your week, pay attention to what you are open to and what you are closed to, notice what makes you uncomfortable, and be aware of when you are avoiding actions. When you become aware, begin to live the rules. If your mind is closed, start to be curious. If you are uncomfortable, sink into the discomfort and get to know it better, and if you know what needs to be done but don’t feel like it, simply choose to take an action no matter how you feel. Remember awareness is only the start, it takes repetition over and over again to retain the Lucid rules of mental training.

If this article resonated with you, don’t forget to download the app.
