Rise Beyond The Bookish Interpretations of Scriptures
Not all episodes of divine incarnations like Lord Krishna are elaborately described in scriptures. Few episodes are just touched. The speaker has to elaborate it further. The debate that it’s the speaker’s imaginary projection on scriptures is equally baseless. Thanks to today’s technology, all scriptures are accessible more than ever, digitally or in hard copies, with elaborate translation, meaning, summary & expert viewpoint. You can read those for yourself. However, if you don’t let the episodes of the scriptures sink in and evolve inside you through contemplation, then you will only be stuck in its skin-deep or superficial meaning.
You can read these episodes from scriptures without a Sadguru’s explanation, but you will not feel the ‘rasa’ (succulence). Your spiritual experience will become far more dry and dour in absence of ‘rasa’. If you are only confined to the bookish interpretations of scriptures, your journey will remain incomplete as you are missing the real quintessence. You may not feel as much love and devotion for God.
This could be fine for Gyaan-Marg (where you experience God by means of scriptural knowledge), but not for Bhakti-Marg (where you experience God through emotional feelings of love, tears etc.).
Between The Lines Interpretation
Having said this, the real meaning often comes from between the lines of scriptures. This is where the ‘rasa’ exists. This is the real quintessence. This ‘rasa’ acts as a catalyst in developing our love for God. The lines of scriptures are the skin, between the lines interpretations is the real flesh, which is only realized by the grace of our Sadguru.
Several enlightened souls alive in the current age have a unique ability to present the scriptural episodes with succulence (rasa), which not only arouses deep interest in the listeners, but also manifests strong affinity and love in the listeners’ heart towards God. It touches not only their heart, but soul. Such interpretations are not the skin, but the real flesh, the real quintessence, the real ‘rasa’.
Enlightened Souls’ Tryst with Scriptures
It is worthwhile to note that the Enlightened Souls have gone through a long process over the years to get us the firsthand realization of the age-old episodes such as Krishna’s life in that age.
They churn the raw lines, raw episodes and raw aphorisms of the scriptures again and again, over the years to make them utmost refined, digestible and succulent enough to be served to us as listeners. They extract the juice in form of quintessence as the output and feed us like a mother feeds her milk to the newborn.
The Enlightened Souls make sure the output is as digestible to us as a mother’s milk is to the newborn.
It takes years for them to process the raw matter of the scriptures, extract the essence of the episodes and serve in a digestible manner to the listeners. This entire process takes their blood, sweat and tears.
- Who knows, few accomplished souls might also have traveled back in time to eyewitness the age-old episodes and get us the eyewitnesses report or live commentary straight from the horse’s mouth.
- Few would have connected and communicated with otherworldly souls to download the firsthand visuals and narratives of the age-old episodes.
- Few would have recalled their past life memory to realize their association with Krishna, just like Arjun had recalled his past memory in ‘Gita’.
Given the techniques of Past Life Regression Therapy, it has become more than easy for ordinary people like us to recover & visualize past lives memories in our current lifetime. Hence, the above should not be a matter of surprise as far as the enlightened souls are concerned.
Even Vedas Conclude in Neti Neti…
Indian philosophy is extremely profound and mysterious. Therefore, even the Vedas have concluded in ‘Neti Neti’. There is no definite or deterministic conclusion. No one can state precisely about it or have a final word. This reflects how infinite is our philosophy and our scriptures.
Even ‘Ram Charit Manas’ states:
इदमित्थं कहि जाइ न सोई ॥
None can state precisely.(Source: 'Ram Charit Manas', Balkand)
Narrator’s Privilege to Detail Out or Cut-Short Divine Pastimes:
In ‘Ram Charit Manas’, the crow-sage Kagbhusundi tells the king of birds Garuda in the end:
कहेउँ नाथ हरि चरित अनूपा। ब्यास समास स्वमति अनुरुपा ॥

I have narrated, my lord, the incomparable story of Shri Hari according to my own lights, at times in brief and at times in detail.
Goswami Tulsidas says that the reciter of discourse has the privilege to briefly cut-short as well as elaborate in detail the divine pastimes of Lord, and so do the current speakers of holy scriptures do.
Final Note
I hope we learn to understand things through a large spectrum and make necessary amends to facilitate a thriving environment to the few Enlightened Souls in India and overseas, not just in the present but also in the future.
