October is a time of contemplation, existing right before the chaos of the winter holidays and new year. It is a time of reflection, of deciding what you want to keep in your life and what you want to be rid of.

As such, this month’s theme, “Labels,” promised to give insight into our writers lives and form connections over those things which elevate and diminish us daily so that we may all grow as a community.

We had fantastic stories of motherhood and the way women are judged in and outside the household, coupled with tales of oppressive language that is still used to undermine women’s strengths.

We were reminded time and time again of the importance of identity — both individually and within the community. By accepting the labels that empower us and rejecting those that don’t, our writers have continued to show what it means to be a modern woman.

While we cannot showcase every writer, we appreciate every submission and story shared.

In honor of that, we would like to take this opportunity to celebrate some of the stories that captivated our hearts and minds. Without further ado, here are a few of our favorites from the month of October, hand-picked by your friendly editors at Modern Women.

Brenda Covarrubias’ Top Pick for October is… “Your Relationship Is Dying Because You Don’t Sort Your Socks” by GB Rogut.

“The Crazy Woman” is a trope as old as time itself. She’s the girlfriend, wife or mother who freaks out if you don’t use a coaster for your drink, or yells at you for not washing the dishes. But is there more than meets the eye? In her article, GB argues that these small gestures are symbolic of a bigger issue within the relationship, and those minuscule tasks may be more important to your relationships than you might initially believe.

Mariana Carvalho’s Top Pick for October is… “Transitioning from IT Consulting to Education Tech” by Meiraf Dawit.

Meiraf reflects on a decision she made a few months ago to transition to EdTech, how her passion for technology and volunteering has helped her take this step and her learnings along the way. To anyone thinking of pursuing their passion as a career: you can be inspired by her story.

ADEOLA SHEEHY-ADEKALE’s Top Pick for October is… “Call Her Anything You Want” by chel writes.

This was such a powerful read for me and one I read over and over again. It highlights our prejudices and challenges us to see the world through someone else’s eyes in an incredibly clever way. It’s gentle and subtle and I think it’s impact is greater because of that. I won’t say to much because i don’t want to give anything away but I’d love to hear what you all think after reading it.

Nicole Dake’s Top Pick for October is… “Influencers Are Romanticizing the SAHM Experience, but the Reality Is Too Different” by Sushmita Singh.

This article addresses the reality of the SAHM experience, and how it can be difficult and isolating for some women, and doesn’t always play out as perfectly as on social media. This is an important read because it combats stereotypes that we all see on a daily basis online.
