Is Spontaneous Sex Better Than Planned Sex?

We love the idea of getting so wrapped up in a romantic moment with our partner that we just dive into sex spontaneously — whether we’re doing the deed in our bed or having sex in strange places. As a result, many people believe that spontaneous sex is best, and if we try to plan when we have sex, it will be much less satisfying.

However, that’s not necessarily the case.

Researcher and registered psychotherapist Katarina Kovacevic, along with her colleague Amy Muise, conducted studies published in the Journal of Sex Research that found that sexual satisfaction from planned sex could be on par with sex that comes out of the blue. In the first study, researchers asked 300 people in romantic relationships their views of spontaneous and planned sex, and to what extent they both lead to sexual satisfaction. They found that those who believed spontaneous sex is better did report having a satisfying sex life.

However, in the second study, reviews were mixed. When researchers asked 100 couples about their views on spontaneous and planned sex, as well as to provide a daily report of their romantic and sex lives over three weeks.
