WHEN WOULD YOU FIRE YOURSELF?

This is a real, pertinent question.

A rather harsh representation but sometimes a literal slap becomes necessary!!!

WHEN WOULD YOU FIRE YOURSELF?

Have you ever paused to ask yourself, are you doing the best that the task needs? Whether you are the best person for that role? If the time has come to fire yourself from that initiative, position, or your own company?

A daring thought but a necessary one!

So, will you?

Has this been done in the past?

I have done so, fired myself from a couple of roles that I could not do justice to.

Can we be honest to ourselves, looking into the mirror while throwing away any ego or vanity? The mirror in our mind doesn’t lie when the fog of myth and biases and rose-tinted glasses is removed.

Here are a couple of examples:

  • Dhoni, captain of the Indian cricket team, stepped down from the captaincy when he knew another man was ready and could get the job done.
  • Intel’s Andy Grove and Gordon Moore did precisely that. They fired themselves, left the building, and returned with a different perspective. Though this may seem like tokenism, sometimes we need to physically walk the talk — and make the changes.

“You can’t win a case if you don’t believe your own shit.”
Jodie Foster/Nancy Hollander
The Mauritanian

What signs should one look for?

  • When we hit a wall.
  • When we lose that motivational edge to keep pushing.
  • When we fall prey to the monotonous and “, that’s the way it has always been done.”
  • When we stop pushing for innovation and motivation
  • When we know, there is another person more capable for this role of a CEO.
  • When we want to step out and look at the business from a whole new perspective, like Andy Grove.
  • When we realize that I am better off being a CMO or mentor or an innovator.

A good CEO will plan for it well ahead and implement the change when it should.

“Making it happen rather than letting it happen.”

It comes down to “control” of the factors. When you make things happen, you are more in control. As a result, the execution is also much smoother.

The real question that keeps recurring, though, is:
Can we answer the questions truthfully to ourselves:

Am I doing a good job in my own company

or

Is it time for me to hand over the reins?

**

It helps to have a sounding board that can help you find the honest answer.
