The next Monero Research Lab meeting is scheduled to take place today — Wednesday, March 2nd 2022 at 17:00 UTC. The meeting will take place on the #monero-research-lab IRC channel. Among other things, the meeting will discuss Monero’s fee policy and dynamic block size for the upcoming network upgrade Fluorine Fermi.

Rucknium and plowsof have set up Moneroresearch.info to store Monero-related research papers. MoneroResearch.info hosts a collection of research papers relevant to improving Monero, powered by the WIKINDX open source software. Check out the website here.

Seth For Privacy has set up a ‘SHTF’ node on an old Pixel with a smashed screen. This is easy to set up thanks to Crypto Grampy’s work, and you should give it a try to help support the Monero network! More information can be found here and here.

Wondering how Monero stacks up against other privacy coins in regards to usage? Justin Ehrenhofer provided a graph showing that while XMR usage is down 5% from December 2021 to January 2022, it still dwarves Zcash.

Additionally, Ehrenhofer also shared a graph of Monero and Zcash usage dating back to 2016.

hyahatiph-labs have released an experimental Monero browser integration to be used on Monero’s testnet. Check it out here. Please note that some Monero users have pointed out that because it requires a custom binary it may be best avoided, however because it’s for testnet it still may be suitable for those interested.

Keyboard Warrior shared a blog post titled Hunting For Logic Bugs In Monero. The post is a deep dive into how Monero processes blocks and protects against double-spends, and discusses how they found a bug which did not end up being a security vulnerability.

In light of the recent Ethereum DAO hack revelations and the Canadian truckers having their Bitcoin transactions traced, you may be curious to learn how Bitcoin is deeply flawed as a tool for privacy and freedom. Check out Seth Simmons’ long time running and periodically updated blog called Bitcoin’s Fungibility Graveyard which “is a list of sources confirming cases of flagging, denied withdrawals, denied deposits, and censorship by services because of a distinct lack of fungibility within Bitcoin”. Check out the webpage here.

Seth For Privacy also highlighted the problems Bitcoin brings from it not being fungible like Monero. Bitcoin donated to Canadian Trucker protesters has been on the move and is closely watched even though authorities haven’t frozen the wallets. It is very possible crypto exchanges that receive these funds may have to comply with sanctions and freeze the Bitcoin if they haven’t already.

Need to make an instant XMR exchange, trading to or from another crypto? While the Monero Moon does not condone or promote illegal activities, please be careful as exchanges such as Fixed Float, a website similar to ChangeNow which doesn’t require KYC, have recently been found to restrict transactions and hold users’ funds if they deem the sources to be from hacking, fraud, or theft. This is why it’s important to know who you are receiving your Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency from, because if it is ‘tainted’ you could find yourself in trouble. With Monero, this is not an issue as it is fungible. Discussion regarding the Fixed Float issue can be found here.
