A lot of designers avoid feedback, the reason could be that they are scared to have their work critiqued or due to a lack of proper approach to feedback.
Receiving feedback
Feedback can be a frustrating part of every project, with clients you may feel you're coming to a compromised outcome when it should feel like an alliance of ideas that elevates that design solution.
Design critiques can turn painful quickly when you don’t define a process or if egos get in the way.
Why is feedback so important?
- Feedback helps you distance yourself from your designs.
- Feedback will help you grow as a designer
There are two types of feedback that can have a significant impact on your design.
- Constructive Feedback:
This will help you move the design forward, it can uncover clues to answering those open questions you may have. It can also identify new blockers for your ideas and success and add momentum towards a direction. Both negative and positive feedback can be constructive. - Destructive Feedback:
This will cloud the way your design moves forward, your design can be misled by asking unrelated questions or wasting people’s time by derailing discussions. It can be complicated to understand what matters because there is just so much noise.
How to get constructive feedback
- Be clear and provide context.
- Clear goals.
- Bring up any big questions you want answers to.
- Invite only the people you need to.
- Figure out who is mandatory and who is optional.
- Put your attendees to work, and make sure everyone is involved.
