My UI/UX Design Learning Journey — DAY 9
Typefaces really help to represent and reinforce the voice of a brand.
Typography is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy legible, clear, and visually appealing to the reader. It involves font style, appearance, and structure, which aims to elicit certain emotions and convey specific messages.
Types of typeface
- Serif
The little curls at the end of the letter forms are called serifs. serif typefaces are traditional, there are types of serif typefaces and some look so different from each other.
There are four classifications of Serifs
- Old style
These are generally referred to as humanists, they are the oldest typeface in the classification. An example of an old style is Goudy. - Transitional
An example of transitional is Times new roman, and also there is a difference btw the thick and thin lines and the strokes - Modern
They are very contrasting, An example of modern is Didot. - Slab
They have little or no constraint between thick and thin lines, in the end, their serifs are much more rectangular or boxy. An example of Slab is Courier.
- Sans Serif
They make up a lot of different types of fonts and typefaces that we use today. Sans serif means without serif in french, they lack those little serif details and are much more modern.
There are four classifications of sans serif
- Grotesque
An example is Sourcesans pro, they are the earliest and very nice types, their letter forms are pretty similar to some serif typefaces. - Neo-grotesque
These are much more plain, with less contrast, and more uniform, an example is Helvetica. - Humanist
An example is the gill sans. They are much more calligraphic than other sans serif typefaces, they also have greater variation between different line widths. - Geometric
They are closely more based on geometric shapes. An example is Futura.
- Display
These include typefaces like Lobster or Abril, which is the broadest and includes the most variation. The most consistent characteristic is that they are not suitable for body copy but it is best for headlines.
- Monospace
They look more like serif fonts, they are variants of censors for serif types of font. It is used to evoke some sort of technical feeling, monospace fonts have widely been used for coding of higher importance of reading individual characters.
Picking a typeface
The first thing that comes to our mind when picking a type is the emotion of the type. Typefaces have their own mood or personality, the mood of a typeface is a very important part of how it should be used. Some types have striking different moods, some are very formal and traditional while others seem more light and modern.
